Deaf Education Research Paper
In this project, I will educate random people about the Deaf community through an interview. By educating random people of the Deaf community, my goal is to eradicate Audism, raise awareness about the rich and beautiful Deaf culture and language, and to provide opportunities for exposure through building bridges and increasing interaction and knowledge. As many may not know, Audism is "the notion that one is superior based on one 's ability to hear or to behave in the manner of one who hears” (Harrington & Jacobi, 2009). In other words, a Hearing individual is more superior to a Deaf person. People, usually Hearing, see the Deaf community as a community that cannot do much because they do not have the ability to hear like Hearing people. However, Deaf people are just like Hearing people and can do just anything that a Hearing person can. Therefore, I will summarize briefly what I did in my project to educate those of the Deaf community.
During this project, I interviewed three random people. Technically, it is not an interview but more of an academic conversation, in my opinion. First, I would ask these people if they were aware of the Deaf community and if they were uncomfortable with the topic. Depending on their response to the question, I would use my knowledge of what I have acquired in CDDS 139 to support or refute their response about the Deaf community or move on with my project. For the ones that accepted the interview, I would ask a few more questions depending on where the conversation went but still pertaining to the Deaf community topic. Therefore, I will share the results of my interviewing experience with my three interviewees of the Deaf community.

...urse of this project, I was somewhat disappointed I did not meet someone who would have less knowledge of the Deaf community. However, I was glad that I did not as well because I learned several new things from my interviewees. Before taking this class course, I never knew this much about the Deaf community and I was getting the wrong perception but I knew there was some good to it as well. I just did not have someone to educate me about the Deaf community. However, if I could have done something differently about this project, I probably would expand the interviews more out into Fresno instead of focusing on two areas. With the new information that I am acquiring from CDDS 139 and from this project, I would use it to educate more people in the future. I want to make sure people know that being Deaf is not a bad thing; perhaps, it is a miracle to the Deaf community.

Mark Drolsbaugh, the author of Deaf Again, was born to deaf parents at a time when the deaf population didn’t have and weren’t given the same availability to communication assistance as they have today. He was born hearing and seemed to have perfect hearing up until the first grade when he started having trouble understanding what was being said but was too young to understand what was happening. (Drolsbaugh 8).
In the beginning of the book, the author talks about deafness. He believe that deafness is not something that should be looked down upon. His beliefs people reduce their thoughts about people with disabilities. He talks about other beliefs on deafness and hard of hearing. After watching the video ‘Through Deaf Eyes’ I’ve gained a better insight into the history of not only deaf people, but deaf culture as well. Even after our eight week course on deaf culture I was still able to be surprised, shocked, and fascinated, and educated by this video. ‘Through Deaf Eyes’ serves a reminder of all the things we learned throughout the semester and those who are familiar with dead history, but a great learning tool for those who are uneducated on the subject matter.

In Ben Jarashow’s Journey Into the Deaf World, he explained Deaf culture and how it feels to be deaf within the world of those who hear. People who are born deaf have a loss of what is commonly viewed as the most important sense, hearing. This leaves them with four senses instead of five; most important sense now being sight followed by touch. In return, this means that a language must be developed that is based heavily on sight. In the United States, it was not until 1960 that American Sign Language (ASL) was recognized as its own language.
Stepping into a room filled with both students who were deaf and others who were not, I was instantly met with smiles and hugs. With that knowledge the deaf character gained more confidence when communicating and was able to achieve bigger goals in their life then when they had little to no knowledge of how things worked in society. In my family, I have a close cousin who is Deaf, and I know that many of my family members have questions about Deaf culture but are too afraid to ask. I felt the same way, which was a main reason I decided to take the ASL class. The class not only opened my mind to the study of American Sign Language, but also how Deaf culture is used in our society. This book has helped me learn a lot, from ways to respect Deaf people and to understand them, which is why I have advised my family to give the book a look as well. I definitely agree with points this book makes, because nearly all of them relate to today’s society and the world that we live in right now. Although, occasionally, some points were a bit confusing and took me off-guard, I performed some critical thinking on it and made a list of those I didn’t quite understand or agree with.

The deaf community does not see their hearing impairment as a disability but as a culture which includes a history of discrimination, racial prejudice, and segregation. According to an online transcript,“Through Deaf Eyes” (Weta and Florentine films/Hott productions Inc., 2007) there are thirty-five million Americans that are hard of hearing. Out of the thirty-five million an estimated 300,000 people are completely deaf. There are ninety percent of deaf people who have hearing parents (Halpern, C., 1996). Also, most deaf parents have hearing children. With this being the exemplification, deaf people communicate on a more intimate and significant level with hearing people all their lives. “Deaf people can be found in every ethnic group, every region, and every economic class” (Weta and Florentine films/Hott productions Inc., 2007). The deaf culture and hard of hearing have plenty of arguments and divisions with living in a hearing world without sound however, that absence will be a starting point of an identity within their culture as well as the hearing culture (Weta and Florentine films/Hott productions Inc., 2007).
From a deafness-as-defect mindset, many well-meaning hearing doctors, audiologists, and teachers work passionately to make deaf children speak; to make these children "un-deaf." They try hearing aids, lip-reading, speech coaches, and surgical implants. In the meantime, many deaf children grow out of the crucial language acquisition phase. They become disabled by people who are anxious to make them "normal." Their lack of language, not of hearing, becomes their most severe handicap. While I support any method that works to give a child a richer life, I think a system which focuses on abilities rather than deficiencies is far more valuable. So today, I have shared with you my journey in deafness. Being deaf can be hard, but it is not the end of the world. I can do what anyone else can do such as talk, play sports and hang out with friends. Every person’s journey is different. For me the key to success is perseverance.
This essay will explore the medical model of disability as well as the social model of disability by providing an in depth analysis of the views and explanations that outline each perspective. It will examine and establish the connection of the two models in relation to Deaf people. Furthermore it will illustrate how Deaf people are defined according to each outlook, as well as the issues and concerns that arise from these perceptions. This essay will consider the medical model and the social model to compare the ideas and objectives of the given articles; Caught in the Deaf Trap by Karen Van Rooyen, A Brave New World of Sound by Thandi Skade, Fake Interpreters: A Violation of Human Rights and lastly Professor Graham Turner’s; 10 lessons from the tale of the ‘fake’ interpreter.
