SOMETHING REALLY REALLY INTUITIVE

President Winston Churchill once said, “Politics is not a game. It is an earnest business.” (CITATION) Being the president of the United States, he could fully comprehend that the government controlled whether a technology succeeded or failed in the market. That being said, how does the government decide which products are fit for funding, or are in need or substantial regulating? Simply, the answer is you. Although that sounds like a cheesy political sham, politics is a game of persuasion, and the public (you) needs to see the government is willing to change a product, for better or worse. To examine this claim in its entirety, it’s useful to dissect both sides of the spectrum through two technologies: Chevrolet and their Corvair, and the creation of NASA. Through an unsafe product, and immoral engineering the Chevy Corvair eventually caused regulations on automobile engineering, while the creation of NASA provided substantial backing for space travel based on national prestige. Looking into these technologies can show that government involvement in a certain technology is based on popular attitudes, therefore funding and regulations are based on public expectations of a product. Initially to understand the importance of government regulation, and even government debate on certain measures one must look at the disastrous Chevrolet Corvair. By outlining this technologies main problems, it can make the governments involvement much more visible. Back in 1959 the Department of Commerce reported that 51,000 people would die from automobile accidents by 1975, that figure was obtained in 1965. That significant figure was reached 10 years before its projected date, and the question is why? The answer was, unlike many other tr... ... middle of paper ... ...the Chevrolet Corvair was given regulations to correct its safety, and how the public created the creation of NASA. By delving into the way the government reacted to the public outcry for increased safety measures, shows that regulations are correlated with the symbols of certain technologies. By comparison the creation of NASA was the governments response to the blow to the United States prestige. Next, we can witness that the original neglect of the government with the Corvair caused many injuries and increased public attention. Finally, NASA was able to achieve its goal and place a man on the moon to reestablish national prestige, and faith from the public. To conclude, the path to success is littered with obstacles, especially obstacles created by the public, and to fix these obstacles the government must step in, fix these problems, and create uniformity
