Success is something individuals aim for through all stages of life. Succeeding at university may entail passing courses, achieving learning goals and consequently graduating, while gaining some experience and exposure. At work, success could take a different form of gaining a job, accomplishing goals, and seeking promotions. While the definition of success may differ for university students and employees at an organisation, the basic principles and skills required are very similar. Individuals require both intrapersonal and interpersonal perception in order to achieve success, whether at university or work. Skills such as self-regulation, self-monitoring, implementing goals and strategies to achieve those goals, as well as harnessing good communication skills and formal relationships are key factors to success. It is with these perceptions that individuals can gain skills that can help overcome barriers to succeed. A good understanding of one’s own metacognition is necessary before aiming to understand that of other people. This is referred to as intrapersonal perception. Self-regulation, which involves self-monitoring and self-motivation, is an essential skill required to achieve academic success at university. It focuses on the concept of individuals being able to accurately judge their level of knowledge and determine the effectiveness of methods implemented for exam preparation. This allows evaluation of strengths and weaknesses, enabling individuals to engage in focused study. Students who can effectively do this will excel in their time at university. Conversely, those who lack in this skill can have major implications, such as overestimating their knowledge, thus hindering their success. Debra A. There are various definitions of success. It can be defined as the as one’s accomplishment of a desired aim or goals. Subsequently, success can also be defined as the attainment of wealth, position or honors. Therefore, success varies from one person to another; it can be a personal aspect as having a pregnancy, academic success, business or political success. However, for one to attain success, whether in an academic, business, political or a private setting, one must put in place strategies that will aid him or her and act as a bridge towards the accomplishment of success. A good strategy must give an overall direction of the intended goals, it is within the sources and opportunities of the desired goal and it advances
Throughout our lives we all experience a variety of things that help us define what success means to us. Some people look at success in a materialistic sense, while others take a more spiritual approach. Regardless of the way we view success or the factors that influence that view, we each have our own very unique Personal Philosophy on the subject. Personally, my philosophy is that the implementation of success strategies is key to achieving what one chooses to define as success. I have found that the three most effective success strategies I can use for years to come are being a critical thinker, improving concentration, and being an active listener. All three of these strategies are very practical and relevant to both my educational and professional pursuits, and therefore have proven to be the most effective in regards to my Personal Philosophy of Success.
Individual success at work is a subjective concept. For some it is defined by the rank that they attain within the company, for others it is defined by the lifestyle that their occupation has allowed them to lead. No matter what the personal definition of success at work is, its achievement is largely influenced by the individual’s interpersonal and intra-personal perceptions. Interpersonal perceptions, that is being able to understand others, and their actions, has high significance when working in the diverse team environments of a workplace. While, interpersonal perceptions may not directly contribute to success at work, it contributes heavily towards the individual’s ability to work in teams, which if done successfully, will directly contribute to individual success at work (Poon 2004). Every interpersonal relationship experiences some sort of conflict at some point in time. However, some people do not have the conflict management skills needed to work past relationship disputes. Unfortunately, relationship conflicts can sometimes erupt into a partner becoming physically abusive. “On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States” (“National”). Due to the increase of domestic physical abuse, it has become the premise of many pop culture songs. For example, “Ain’t So Easy” is a song about a man that has physically abused his partner. His partner has packed their bags and is on the verge of leaving him and his abusive ways behind. Once the pleading, the bartering of sweet nothings, and manipulations beings, hesitation to leave can set in, but the decision to leave still needs to be made.
Interpersonal communication, defined as the process by which people exchange information, feelings, and meaning through verbal and non-verbal messages, is an integral part of our everyday life (SkillsYouNeed, 2015). Through a combination of what we say, our choice of words and tone, and what we don’t, our body language, individuals exchange information, express opinions and emotions, and form and nurture relationships. Of the several theories we have discussed involving commitment, I have taken a particular interest in M.P. Johnson’s Theory of Commitment as I feel it very effectively dissects the primary drives that reside behind one’s desire, or lack thereof, to remain committed in a relationship. In his theory, Johnson describes three kinds of perceived commitment that ultimately lead one to the decision to stay in their relationship. These three kinds of commitment discussed are personal, moral and structural commitment (Berscheid & Regan, 2005).

Interpersonal Relationships are one of the most important things in business and everyday life. You will have to put in the time and effort. Planning ahead allows you to have a schedule so you won’t be behind. If you have a plethora of skills, you will have a higher chance of success than other people. Skills allow you to qualify for certain positions and allow you to excel in what you need to. Being in my Personal Development class there has been many success strategies from our On Course textbook. These strategies will be carried on in my life as a guide to my very own personal philosophy of success. After careful consideration the four most appropriate On Course success strategies that will be best of use to achieve success will be to discover self-motivation, master self-management, adopt lifelong learning, and accept personal responsibility. Success is everything you make it out to be, it is accomplishments of your own set of goals and dreams you wish to achieve.
What does it take to be successful? This question cannot be answered, as there are many definitions of what success really is. No matter how one describes it, there are a certain set of skills that are necessary across the board; those being interpersonal skills. These are just skills used to communicate among one another. If one cannot communicate efficiently, it can be catastrophic. Many of today’s citizens are having difficulty with this and it is impacting our society as a whole. The detrimental effects of poor interpersonal skills in American society begins at home and can harm one’s professional opportunities and mental state.
