In the past companies would reach out to their customers or try to gain potential customers via visual advertising. The advertising could be in the form of a visual ad in a publication or a mailing or television advertising. This form of advertising was restrictive; it provided only a single line of communication, one from the business directly to the customer or potential customer. The introduction of the internet and social media transformed advertising as it was once known. The Internet also provides new ways-often instantaneous and spontaneous-to gather information from customers, adjust product offerings, and increase customer value (Laudon & Laudon 348). To most people, Facebook and Twitter are ways to keep in touch with friends and to let them know what you are doing. For companies of all shapes and sizes, however, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media have become powerful tools for engaging customers, amplifying product messages, discovering trends and influences, building brand awareness, and taking action of customer requests and recommendations. There are other advantages to using social media; it provides a business an exposure to a large audience. It is possible to draw in an audience that a business never considered a possible target market.
