The internet is not only a mass medium but is also a global medium with a potential to reach everyone on the globe (Ohiagu, 2011). As of 2014, 92.5% of the population in Canada uses the internet. Across the globe, 46.1% of population has access to the internet, and that continues to grow. A small radio station broadcasting to a town in the middle of nowhere may only be able to broadcast their waves to people within their town and some surrounding areas, however, if they were to post a tweet, or an article to their website, then they suddenly have the potential to reach billions of people around the world. Yes, it is giving the standard industry much more completion, but without competition, progress would be much slower. The industry is responding, and adapting, and becoming more and more innovative by the click.
Our world is at our fingertips, or voice can reach the world, and the traditional media is being challenged and it all comes down to one invention; the internet. With the instant global reach, the opportunity it brings, and the potential it creates for every form of media, the internet has been one of the most important inventions in the history of media. In an article published to the Gaurdian, writer Aleks Krotoski said “If knowledge is power, the web is the greatest tool in the history of the world.”
