ISO 9000
International Organization For Standardization (ISO) was established in 1947 which involves 157 countries in order to coordinate and unify various industrial standards. Prior to the establishment of the ISO, there are 2 main independent organization that had similar objectives as the ISO, that are National Standardizing Association (ISA) and also United Nation Standards Coordinating Committee (UNSCC). ISA and UNSCC are both established in 1926 and 1944 respectively. Unfortunately, both were not achieved worldwide acceptance. ISO is not product standard but a Quality System Standard. ISO was then formed and adopted majority of the rules and procedures from ISA. ISO has published a lot of international standards in many fields and sectors including in mechanical engineering. One of the examples of ISO that involved in mechanical engineering is ISO 9000 Quality System Series Standards. ISO 9000 is a set of international standard for quality management systems and quality assurance which is critical to international business. It require firms to document their quality control system at every step from the incoming raw materials, product design in-process monitoring and so on, so, that they’ll be able to identify those areas that are causing quality problems and correct them. ISO 9000 is an international standard for quality management systems. The origin of ISO 9000 is started with the 1959 United States Department of Defence MIL-Q-9858 quality management program which then in 1968 this program was adopted by North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), then, followed by British Standard Institute (BSI) in 1979. All standards apply to all types of industry sector whether they are large or small industry and also including design, manufacturing, service, research, development and also education. Unfortunately, this wide applicability also became a weakness of the model especially in the software development and maintenance industry. This is because, it is difficult in defining a common language that everyone in the industry sector can truly understand and apply. To compensate those problem ISO had published a new guideline specifically for software development that was ISO 9000-3.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international standard-setting body that consists of qualified subject-matter experts from more than 10 countries that attempt to integrate national standards like those from the American National Standards Institute, ISO Technical Committee (TC) 215 Health Informatics, the BSI Group from the United Kingdom, and the Standards Council of Canada, to name a select few (Murphy, 2015).

The company has a tolerance of 2/1000 mm for its products. It is ensured that all employees are aware, through the EHS website, of the use of ISO 14001 as the company's policy. Annually, consumers, customers and stakeholders are given EHS performance reports using ISO 14001. The company has utilized ISO 9001 ( quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 8124 ( safety of toys) for ongoing improvement and maintenance of safety. All LEGO websites globally are certified with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards. In addition, they help with the managements of the environment, health and safety. ISO 14001 is used to ensure all necessary policies are satisfied and improvements on necessary issues including the environment for the employees and decreasing waste management and maintains the reliability and reputation of the company. The ISO 8124, also known as the safety of toys, safety requirements are adapted by the LEGO company despite of the area of the manufacture of the toys. They are crucial because they are the basis for all national toy safety requirements. The ISO 9001 derives from the quality management standards established for military and nuclear power fields. The publication of ISO 9001 provide a general applicable guideline to standardize a wide range of industrial areas, regardless of the type of product. It is known as ISO 9000 family and the ISO 9001 is the one which is concerned about the requirement of the QMS. Of course, that creates the needs for understanding these standards in order to get the certificate from the organization which is authorized by the ISO. That also creates the need for the training which is very important for companies to implement the QMS. The standards have been developed the course of the quality history from needing a quality control to a quality assurance. Basically, implementing a Quality Management System is important for companies to succeed in today’s market, and will enhance customer satisfaction, and improve internal process. It becomes more and more a necessity for international companies because it saves a lot of money in one hand and time in the other. Nevertheless, implementing such system requires an effort, training, and using consultant companies to ease the establishment of the system and to get the certificate eventually.

Introduction Effectively integrating information technology (IT) into an organization’s business processes is critical if the organization wants to increase productivity and remain profitable. IT includes items such as the systems software, application software, computer hardware, and the networks and databases that help manage the organization’s information. When implementing quality standards and processes that are forever changing in the IT world, organizations must balance these changes while continuing to rapidly implement new systems technologies in order to stay competitive. Quality improvements in IT delivery and service support can be improved by measuring and tracking user satisfaction, integration and flexibility early on in the decision process and reinforcing them throughout the review process. Adhering to quality management best practices means ensuring that quality standards are strictly enforced and entrenched into the organization’s philosophy.
High complexity, invisibility of the product and opportunity to detect the defects provided the uniqueness which will meet the challenges for the development and operation of quality assurance for software. This paper provides a brief introduction to software quality assurance and discuses about the software quality metrics and their limitations.
