Three different stories, 3 different characters, 3 internal and external conflict yet one major theme. Upon recently reading the selections, “The Censors”, “The story of an hour”, and “The open window” the reader immediately starts off with the characters facing an internal conflict among them that affected those around them. Causing them to end up in a very situation when the story ended, leaving the reader bewildered and full of questions. Upon reading each of the selections I have come up with the conclusion that the major them amongst them is “Appearance vs. Reality”. Regardless when someone reads the short stories one could tell that they were different in style with the same resolution.

To begin with the story “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela was written to depict an event that was happening in the world at the time. In which was the time when Argentina overthrew the government in 1976. The new government was strict and killed thirteen to fifteen thousand innocent without even giving them the chance because the government feared that the poor would eventually try to overthrow the government. With that in mind, the main character in our story Juan begins with a conflicting that he is facing internally. Juan was worried about whether or not the letter he sent to Marina would make it to her house safely or would they become a victim to the government. In this short story a man named Mr. Fummelton went by nursing home in order to get rehab but the things there started to bother him in a way that it shouldn’t have. Since his condition had him on edge the niece decided to play a trick on him by telling him a story about her aunt’s family. In the beginning Mr. Fummelton was sympatric for the lady so when she arrived late he did nothing but understand her feelings and pain. But as time progressed he soon realized that the aunt was going crazy because she kept talking about the family as if they were still alive. He was jittery until he physically saw the mirage bodies in the window while talking to the aunt. This caused him to quickly run away before the aunt could fully introduce her family to him. This story also embezzled situational irony due to the fact that the author had the niece tell a convincing story that even the audience was convinced of the story but it had a twist ending whereas the aunt’s family didn’t actually die but actually were returning from a
