Interdisciplinary planning of care has been integrated into nursing practice over the years. Reaching consensus for treatment and goals for patients is when interdisciplinary care planning is successful and collaborative. The Joint Commission has conceptualized the care planning process. A structured framework for communicating will result in safe and effective practice (Keenan, Yakel, Tschannen, & Mandeville, n.d.). The purpose of this paper is comparing the design structure of research studies. Qualitative and mixed method studies were used.
Contrasting Research Approaches
Qualitative research is non-numerical, generally survey form and often includes open-ended questionnaires (ACET, Inc, 2013). Direct observation, focus group interviews, and written material were the collection methods used in the article Development of a patient-centered care pathway across healthcare providers: a qualitative study written by Rosstad, Garasen, Steinsbekk, Sletvold, & Grimsmo (2013).
Mixed method studies combine both quantitative and qualitative methods. The article written by Atwal & Caldwell (2002) entitled Do multidisciplinary integrated care pathways improve interprofessional collaboration, chose data collection methods were a combination of stakeholder interviews, the qualitative approach, and inter-professional audits and variance analysis, both are the quantitative approach.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Mixed method design incorporates the positives and negatives of both quantitative and qualitative methods.
