Interactive Learning Environment—Multi-user Virtual Environments (MUVEs)
Description of Multi-user Virtual Environments (MUVEs) According to Harvard, MUVEs are “multi-user virtual environments that enable multiple simultaneous participants to (a) access virtual contexts, (b) interact with digital artifacts, (c) represent themselves through “avatars”, (d) communicate with other participants, and (e) take part in experiences incorporating modeling and mentoring about problems similar to those in real world contexts.” (Dieterle, E., & Clarke, J., Harvard, 2014). How can these gaming or mutual environments actually be used in teaching and learning effectively? The design of the MUVE is critical to the success of the learning and teaching. Rather

The student may already be feeling separation from others in an online environment. If the space is uninhabited, then this might add to that feeling and hamper learning. Ways to overcome this may be effective limiting of access so that MUVEs can only be accessed for certain lengths of time. Students and teaches must be active in the environment as well, not just logged on and not interacting with other teachers, students, or objects. Action has to be taking place for learning and teaching to be taking place. “If a space does not offer social interaction, then the interest in wandering around a deserted campus, even when there are butterflies or jumping fish, soon wains. Indeed, for students involved in distance learning, possibly already feeling a sense of isolation due to their mode of study, the experience might be quite negative. If virtual worlds are to help …show more content…
Adequate access time to the MUVE should also be available, as different students and teachers access and do work at all times of the day and week. The MUVE should be designed so that it emulates and stimulates an interactive environment for learning and teaching with multiple users who are able to interact with devices and others. The MUVE should be able to be connected to adequate resources for research purposes and the quality of the artifacts and information presented should be of high quality to enhance the learning process.
Description of five advantages of MUVEs MUVEs establish an environment that is familiar to many students because they also use MUVEs for non educational purposes such as games and relaxation, as well as in the workplace environment. MUVEs enable a safe environment for users to interact with others so that they cannot be harmed physically during the interaction process. MUVEs provide instant access across the internet to a variety of learning environments that would otherwise be inaccessible to the students and teachers. MUVEs allow interaction with other students and teachers around the world who would otherwise not be able to communicate because of distance or other financial
In “Can You Be Educated from a Distance?” by James Barszcz, the author attempts to pinpoint the negative aspects of distance education compared to traditional classrooms. At the beginning of the article, he first describes the basic format of online courses, which results in a vast minimization of face-to-face communication of students with instructors. He then touches on some of the beneficial qualities of online education, and the reasoning for its quickly growing popularity among students and schools alike. He mainly attributes this trend to the overall convenience that is promised to students by online courses. These courses allow students to learn material in the comfort of their own home. Barszcz also considers the financial appeal for universities. Having an increasing number of students enrolled solely in online classes allows schools to save money on electricity, as well as decrease the amount of staff they employ. Also mentioned is that many strong advocates of distance...
... Developing tools that secure inquiry and social interaction in the classroom, along with individual discovery learning, helps teachers create effective learning environments. Students involved in an interactive and facilitating environment can greatly improve their cognitive capabilities.
Access – Develop and implement a staff and student technology model that provides “just in time” access to technology and resources i.e., improved teacher technology, modern lab facilities with flexible hours, mobile/flexible student technology including strategic access to the web.
I had to keep in mind how the arrangement of the room can either help or a hinder student’s productivity. Some my research included how to promote good communication in a classroom between a teacher and their students. This also included the benefits of creating an environment with more open communication a student and their
Standard #3: Learning Environments. “The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation (Henson, 2009).”
The class as a whole will play an interactive area software game on mathplayground.com on the Smartboard. Students are motivated and enjoy this type of activity. It allows them to see mathematics in real world situations. The Smartboard allows the students to have an interactive hands on experience (Purdue University, 2007). Students that are actively involved in the instructional process tend to remember information (Moore, 2014).
By using this multimodal teaching strategy, I was able to assess the students’ understanding of the concept by seeing how they responded to the different learning methods used. I verbally discussed the concept
In a K-12 setting, distance learning or traditional learning requires careful planning that must take place in order for the educational process to work for the students. When we look at both forms of education there are still pros and cons to both. Although online learning has made a major impact in the world of education, many people have not accepted this form of education. One of the reason for their concerns is that students cannot get fast answers to their questions about the assignment from the teacher. Another concern is that the students cannot perform effectively in a group collaboration that is taking place online. Also, students may not effectively do their homework from an online program. Lastly, some families do not have the technology at home for online learning.
For teachers to be effective their classrooms should be open, encouraging and safe environments, where a strong student-teacher relationship can be achieved (Marsh, 2008). Students should be treated with respect in order to meet their need for belonging (Eggen&Kauchak, 2010). The layout of the room and resources need to be well considered allowing different areas for different activities (Bennett &Smilanich, P. 1994) keeping in mind space for easy movement and creative work. Seating arrangements, noise level and room temperature all need to be taken into account when planning the classroom to maximise productive lea...
Not all students can adapt to virtual learning, as students have to be good readers and the online program may lack the auditory support found in traditional classes. They also must be self-motivated and organized so as to keep track of their work and assignment due dates. Students wishing to take classes that require direct instruction and use of materials not available at home, such as science classes requiring lab work or cooking classes, may have to enroll in classes elsewhere. There has also been some concern “that students who are enrolled full-time in online public schools may suffer from a lack of opportunities for socialization, and consequently may fail to develop important social skills” (Sivin-Kachala & Bialo, 2009, p. 2). There are both pros and cons to virtual learning.

The distance learning environment creates a multitude of challenges that students or instructors do not have to deal with in a brick and mortar classroom. One controversial topic may be that people cannot express their emotions effectively online. Online environments are also complicated to have interactions and establish a presence. Is this really the case though? Is it challenging to show emotion online or have a presence; however, it is not impossible. These topics will be discussed in the following.
Distance Learning is a system of pondering in which lessons are announced or classes are executed by correspondence or over the internet. Distance learning has become very popular for older adults who wish to go back to school and complete their education or increase their education, but it can be beneficial to many students. Online learning allows flexibility which gives you the opportunity to continue your daily routine or commitments. Many courses can be completed in a shorter amount of time, and you do not have to stay on campus or commute daily with online courses. It is a great way to obtain a higher education.
...mpus isthe use of WebCT. This web site allows professors to create a source for the course syllabus, lecture notes and course calendar’s to be posted, along with public forums and public chat rooms. WebCT keeps track of what students are enrolled in what courses and when the student logs in, it brings up the information available for that student’s courses, along with notes if anything has been updated since the student’s last visit. All of this is available forLSSU students at their web page. These are examples of how exactly technology has affected education at Lake Superior State University.
