Intellectual Benefits of Television

Watching Television these days has become an American past time. In the average household having a television in every room is practically a requirement. Cable companies provide such a wide range of television shows and network to choose from that one can never be bored. When channel surfing TV viewers have the options of, TV drama shows, kids shows, sports games, cooking shows, game shows, reality entertainment show such as “American Idol” and reality TV shows like “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Why go to the library and read a compelling novel when you have a wide variety of entertainment from the comfort of your sofa? Anyone familiar with the abundance of channels available on even Basic Cable can easily see that the choices are instant, computers can stream shows immediately, and television can enter our lives in vast quantities and quite easily. My own view is that because Television entertainment is widely assessable and varies with genres that it has become more compelling to its viewers.

Television shows are becoming continuously addictive to the frequent viewers who tune in because the story plots are becoming more compelling. Shows such as “Desperate Housewives”, which follows the lives of a group of suburban women, seen through the eyes of their dead neighbor. These women experience domestic struggles, family life, all while facing the secrets, crimes and mysteries hidden behind the doors of their homes and at the surface of their beautiful and yet seemingly perfect suburban neighborhood. Indeed this show is so intriguing due to its twisted plot that it is impossible not to watch. ...violence they are unable to separate reality from fiction. Younger members of the audience in particular are impacted by what they observe on frequent basis. Exposure to violent content will natural produce violent type behavior they might not perceive the serious consequences of violence in real life situations and fail to separate this from reality.

In short,television isn’t for everyone. It can become addictive, and you'll end up watching hours of programming with either a newly found knowledge or a negative influence depending on which show you prefer to tune into. The accessibility of television makes it difficult not to watch. If hours of television is going to be watched a one should choose a show that is compelling and complex so that is is being watched with a purpose. What you watch is what you learn and what you don’t learn is just pure entertainment.
