Integrating SmartBoards Into the Classroom

Review of Literature

To date, there has been quite a bit of research in the field. The integration of the SmartBoard into the classroom is an effective teaching technique for three reasons. The first is that an interactive white board motivates and engages students. Furthermore, this technology helps students organize material, so there are benefiting cognitively. As a result of the two, the achievement of students is greater when a SmartBoard is utilized. In the following paragraphs I will discuss what the research states about each area of improvement.

SmartBoards are Engaging

The main reason the SmartBoard are successful in the classroom is that students enjoy using them, thus, they maintain the attention of students, For example, in his 2005 article, Reedy supports this idea when he assertates, “Students say that the whiteboards draw their attention and help them stay awake and focused in the classroom” (Reedy, 2005). Reedy made that conclusion after completing a study involving 73 elementary students for the article, A whiteboard success story. This study found that interactive whiteboard software, in fact, did increase motivation in students studying mathematics. (Reedy, 2005)

One reason why Smartboards may keep students awake is the face-pace created when an interactive whiteboard is used. For, the following quote was taken from a cover story in School Library Journal, “Whiteboards creates a faster pace in the classroom and enhanced interaction between teachers and students... (School Library Journal, 2007) The reason for this is that students were engaged in the lesson, therefore the pace quickened as there were fewe distractions.
