Horn Lake Intermediate School is comprised of over one thousand students in grades three through five. Information was gathered from the school site to evaluate the effective instructional practices at Horn Intermediated School. I started the morning off greeting my principal. She entered her office and turned the computer on to check emails. She played several voice mails and called a couple of parents back concerning students’ academic grades. At seven-thirty, the intercom came on for the pledge of allegiance. The school counselor followed with positive words of encouragement directed to students and staff members. Next, the song “Tell Me Something Good!” came across the intercom. At this time, students led a self-directed conversation telling about some good things happening in their lives. Then, I attended a morning huddle which includes three other assistants, two school counselors, a reading interventionist, and I. The discussions session included current students on the teacher support team intervention list, tier three behavior students, upcoming positive behavior program implementation, and other school business. Mrs. King asked me to step out to speak to her assistant principals privately. Around 9:30am, my principal went to another school to do evaluations at another in which she was an assistant principal the previous year. Later, we reviewed the development and scheduling of our state MKAS2 assessments for third graders. The school had few interruptions which is always great. Mrs. McCool had one interruption from an assistant principal who needed to see a student for the bus write-up. Overall, her class had 89 percent on task rate of engagement. Mrs. Henderson had a 90 percent on task rate of engagement. The two teachers are doing an outstanding job with their classroom management. Mrs. Henderson is a new teacher at our school this year and her mentor teacher is Mrs. McCool. Mrs. McCool has been teaching at our school for the last five years. We have a reading intervention program for our struggling readers called the Leveled Literacy Intervention program. Students in grades three through five attend this program daily.
