Throughout history, a plethora of political power plays have been exhibited on the world stage the Olympic Games provide. The most grave among these ploys is undoubtedly the terrorist threats and actions that spring up from all manner of international organizations. Terrorist cells, whether affiliated with their country’s government or not, rush to take advantage of any publicity that they can bring to their cause. Many groups view Olympic competitions as a world stage for their acts of terror and as an opportunity to draw attention to their extremist ideals. The Olympic Games are a favorite of most terrorist organizations because no other event provides the same amount of international attention and publicity. (Jackson) Some of these sinister dealings prove to be nothing aside from empty threats. On many accounts threats are made but no terrorist activity actually occurs. Unfortunately this is not always the case. Throughout Olympic history there have been black marks of violence and terror that strike fear in the hearts of athletes and spectators alike. Despite the fact that terrorist groups are generally not affiliated with a specific country, their activities make up a significant amount of political tensions surrounding the Olympic Games.
Long standing rivalries between nations are a main source of political issues in the Olympic Games. The rivalries usually spring up over large issues such as the Cold War or human rights issues. Since 776 BCE, the Olympics have been a way for people of different cultures to come together and compete in friendly competition. In 1892 the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, although it had been over a thousand years since the last game it still had brought together an assortment of different religions and ethnic groups together. The Olympic Games of Munich started like any other, the parade of nations, proud representatives filled with dreams of gold medals and strong finishes. A moment of glory and hopefully standing tall on the podium as their flag is raised. This is a time when nations come together in peace to show the power of human achievement through sport. It did not happen that way.
The purpose of this study is to analyze extensively the role that Cold War tensions played in the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. The analysis seeks to understand the effect that politics, have on the organization, implementation and eventually success of sporting events such as the Olympics. In order to do so, the analysis will address the events leading up to, during and after the Moscow Olympic Games of 1980. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 will be addressed to help place the games into perspective. Also, exchanges between the two nations before, during and after the games will be analyzed to understand if and to what extent they affected the games. To investigate the issue, the study will address the history, values, purpose and limitations of two critical sources; Olympic Sports and Propaganda Games: Moscow 1980 by Barukh Ḥazan and Dropping the Torch: Jimmy Carter, the Olympic Boycott, and the Cold War by Nicholas Evan Sarantakes.

Modern Day Olympics are a huge tradition that sweeps the screens of televisions across the world. Competitors take the arena with uniforms that dawn their countries colors and designs that are meant to resemble their designated flag. For months the news is centered around the games; the preparation, the athletes, and of course the competition. Countries aren 't obsessed, they are inspired and full of pride seeing athletes from their country compete and show their incredible skill. This tradition dates back to ancient Greece where the games began. Tony Perrottet writes about the traditions of the ancient game in his book The Naked Olympics.

The Pan American Games (also referred to as the Pan Am Games) are the world's third largest international multi-sport games which take place every four years. These competitions constitute a major event in America however, Canada, Ontario will be proudly hosting the next edition in the upcoming year of 2015 within the following cities of; Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, and Niagara (Toronto 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games, 2014). Holding a major multi-sport event requires a great deal of preparation and responsibility as the nation will be accountable for the performers, officials, and spectators. The abstract of this essay is to demonstrate how the Pan American Games will not only benefit the diversity and reputation of the city of Toronto, but as well present its offering to tourism.
Politics is the art or science of government or governing, especially the governing of a political entity, such as a nation, and the administration and control of its internal and external affairs. The Olympic Games is an event held every 4 years, which includes a variety of sporting activities in which different countries compete against one another. “Sport is frequently a tool of diplomacy”. By sending delegations of athletes abroad, states can establish a first basis for diplomatic relations or can more effectively maintain such relations” (Espy 3). One might think that politics and the Olympics have nothing to do with each other, but in fact, they do have a lot in common.

Yet the history of the Olympic movement has provided several examples of how they influence one another, directly and indirectly. An example of sports affecting political directly is after years of boycotting, the Olympics in Barcelona brought together athletes form around the world. This problem was about Nelson Mandela and the racial discrimination. The most recent incident is the Russians getting banned from the 2018 Winter Olympics. The Russian government was helping the teams cheat by providing performance enhancing drugs, then the government covering it up from them.
