Definition and History

Information Systems and Operations Management(ISOM) is mixture of business related sections of Informational Technology and the operational/management side of businesses. According to the George Mason University School of Business page ISOM is used to teach students how to design, improve, and how to manage business processes. One side of ISOM is Information Systems, which is the gathering and transmission of data. Meanwhile operations management deals with the design and the ability to control production processes and the establishment of business operation structures.


Informational Systems is a relatively new concept in its history as it started around the mid 1960’s. The use of the TELEX machine allowed businesses to communicate amongst their afar locations. In response business schools began developing MIS programs to meet the high demand of Information Systems managers (J.M, 2000). In the 1970’s the importance of Informational Systems and it’s versatility it brought to business became well known (J.M,2000). Around this time business moved the mainframe from accounting management to the IS department as their was an apparent need for organized accessible data.


Operational Management has a very established history in the business world. It’s roots started during the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and early 19th century. During the Industrial Revolution inventions allowed goods to be processed at higher rates, in result the formation of modern factories began (“1.D. The historical evolution of OM”, 2014). Mason’s School of Business ‘Exploring a Career in Information Systems & Operations Management’ tab on their website offers a description of the major, the responsibilities of an ISOM major, skills needed, skills gained from the major, a sample of occupations, a look at ISOM in the business world, as well as sample professional associations and publications. The School of Business also includes student organizations. Mason Information Systems and Operations Management is a ISOM student organization offered at Mason. Along with student organizations, Mason School of Business offers an ISOM Honors Program. As described by the website, it “provides highly motivated students majoring in ISOM with an enriched academic experience integrating curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular development.”
