Through the stages of early-childhood to adolescence, school-age children are growing at a fast-pace rate. During this time, factors such as child’s skills, threshold for learning, and development thrive. This growth is grouped categories, known as The Five Domains of Childhood Development. They are separated into five sections - Cognitive, Social, Emotional, Moral, and Physical.These domains have evolved and changed over time, using a combination of work from psychologists and educators such as Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, and Vygotsky. Using these domains, educators assess the performance of each individual child, and have a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. There are many different influences that play a significant role in how school-age children develop and the person they will eventually become. Childhood development has been studied by psychologists so that we can understand how children develop physically, cognitively, emotionally, socially, and linguistically. Although psychologists have established theories, at this age of childhood development, there learning can be impacted according to the child’s circumstances whether its because of poverty, cultural atmosphere, or disabilities. Children that suffer from a disability, whether it be a physical, emotional, linguistic, social, or mental disability are confronted by some roadblocks including inadequate services, negative attitudes and lack of accessible environments. A child’s social skills are built by sharing, taking turns, exercising self control and working in groups. When a child receives negative attitudes from their peers, it could cause that child to lack in their social development, because they’re not able to interact with... ... middle of paper ... ...ot only does a speech impediment or language barrier effect a student’s cognitive learning, but also their social performance with peers and teachers. According to the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association, school-age children with speech disabilities will often be below grade level. They will struggle to complete work, and have difficulties with social interaction and linguistic cues. Lack of emotional development in a school-age child can result in detrimental consequences, and have a deep effect on the other domains. According to The Child Welfare Information Gateway, emotional maltreatment results in damage or lack of cognitive growth, and stunts learning. Exposure to emotional neglect and abuse will create changes in crucial areas, such as a child’s physical condition, social interaction, and ability to learn cognitively in the classroom.
