The Influence of Television on Today’s Younger Generation
Television has an enormous influence on the younger population of today. With the explosion of technology and the 24/7 access to television, children are flooded on a daily basis with huge amounts of media. All the accessibility to television shows allows for children to see and learn things, which are not suitable or appropriate for their age, leading to immoral, inappropriate, aggressive and anti-social behavior. TV shows shape and mold young people in a lot of ways, creating thoughts and ideas that have a huge influence in their views and actions. Many times the opinions and attitudes shown on TV are very harmful to the development of children. Television is a major contributor in dispersing inappropriate material to our younger society. There is no doubt at all that television has changed the world and how we view it. With just the point and click of a button of a remote, the viewing possibilities on TV are endless. There are literally hundreds of cable channels to choose from with cartoons, sitcoms, dramas, news, reality shows and music videos filling the airwaves.
Children spend hours in front of the television every day. Instead of eating dinners around a table as a family, many children eat dinner in front of the television. TV is full of programs that depict risky behaviors as cool, fun, and exciting. Whether the child's preference is a cartoon, an action packed movie, a dramatic series, professional sports such as boxing, news, nature programs or a crime scene show, the detrimental effects of TV becomes greater every time they tune in to watch a TV show. Since children are visual learners and television is a powerful teacher, children watch their favorite charac...

... even the social aspect of youth. TV is very influential to today’s youth and it can also be the most damaging to young developing minds. Watching television that has so much violence or immoral behavior on shows has become such an ordinary, everyday part of society that many people fail to realize the huge impact which it has on all aspects of young society. Behavior seen on television affects the way children act, the values they hold, and the way they perceive reality. These effects can result in the breaking down of relationships in our society. Family relationships, as well as respect for family relationships deteriorates. With the overall impact of the television becoming an increasing problem within the younger generation, a decrease in terms of respect in our society today can already be seen. Respect for self disintegrates along with respect for others.
Children in their adolescents years watch a great amount of TV each week and it is almost inevitable that they will start to be influenced by what they see on their television. They will see diffe...
When television first arrived in the mid-fifties, the T.V. was viewed as an “asset” to every home. Over the years, as television watching increased, it has shown its effects on family life. As parents began to be concerned about their children watching too much television, it grew to be one of the biggest influences in their life. This began to affect the family socially.
Television has become a big part in children’s day-to-day lives especially in the 20th century. Children in this century rely on television to keep them entertained and educated instead of entertaining and educating themselves by participating in activities, which will teach them a lot more in life then the actual television. There is no doubt that children are most easily influenced by television because of the different content that they watch as well as the amount of time consumed watching TV. The television does have an emotional and intellectual development on children but this all depends on the content that they’re watching and the way that they absorb the information that the show is trying to send out. Different programs will portray
Consistently, everywhere, in this century there seems to be some form of a TV screen. These screens appear in restaurants, schools, at work, at home, and quite possibly more. What is forgotten in society is how that screen may affect the lives of the children in this modern world. When children are constantly watching a television screen there may be consequences to their health and education. Most parents do not have the ability to control what is shown on TV. Many programs disagreeably display marathons after school and during holidays. Supposedly, adult shows are only showed late at night, but with movies becoming more and more explicit, even bed time can’t stop the most determined child. Children’s problems in education and health are a direct result of the amount of TV watched.
The media in today’s society is very influential on children. There are many things that children at a very young age are learning, for example violence. Many children learn violent behavior and they become violent and aggressive children because they are exposed to so much mature content. Many parents are not aware of what their children are watching, and without knowing it, their children are raised by the media. Many television shows contain a lot of violence, for example kids fighting each other, kids bullying other kids and kids yelling and disrespecting their parents. Unfortunately, at a very young age children are learning to be aggressive and violent because they are spending more time watching television than spending it with the family. Now days many kids turn into bullies because they believe it is a way to defend them, a way to gain respect and admiration from their peers. They do not respect their parents and they get out of control at a very young age, and many parents cannot control their behavior. If parents do not monitor what their children are watching, then the media will have a great impact on their children’s life.
Dowshen, Steven. (October 2011). “How T.V. Affects Your Child.” Kidshealth.org. Retrieved March 18th,2014, from http://kidshealth.org/parent/positive/family/tv_affects_child.html
The effect of the media on young children is especially salient. Young children often learn how to act and behave from what they observe at home, from the adults and older peers they come in contact with, and from what they see on television.
It may be hard to admit, but television has become an intricate part of our everyday lives. People children often find themselves sitting in front of the television screen for a longer period of time than before and this has evolved immensely over the past few years. In this article, “The Trouble with Television,” by the author Marie Winn, mentions that addiction of television is negative effects on children and families. It keeps the families from doing other things and it’s a hidden competitor for all other activities. Television takes place of play and on top of that kids who watch a lot of television grow uncivilized. Also, the author mentioned that televisions are less resourceful for children and have negative effects on children’s school achievement and on physical fitness. Although there are so many other types of addictions but the author Marie Winn’s points of argument of watching television is a serious addiction that our children and families have negative effects.
Television allows the viewer to leave their everyday life and enter into a world full of fun, adventure, and even love. Television is now used by many children for educational purposes. Everyone has seen at least a little of Barney, a show that helps kids learn the alphabet and many life lessons as well. There are now tens if not hundreds of shows that are like Barney broadcast all over the world. These shows help a child develop the social skills that one needs at such a young age. Television can be argued to have brought families together. It may not be good that dinner is served in front of the television every so often, but at least the family is together. In this world of fast paced activity, it is hard to find a family that actually sits down to dinner more than once a week. Television is arguably the best form of media and current information that can be found. Everyday of the week, 24 hours a day a person can find current news b...
Many people don’t believe that viewing some violent acts in the media doesn't really influence the way a person acts. Children learn by observing, imitating, and making behaviors by themselves, which are greatly influenced by the media (Clark 1). Children learn very easily. They spend many of their free time in front of the T.V. Parents tend to use T.V. as a babysitter for kids. Televisions are colorful and fun! Most human are drawn into the mysterious world of the media, starting since they were a little baby. "When television debut in the 1990's, two-third of television sets were owned by families with children less than twelve years of age". Children are theoretically more susceptible to behavioral
Many times watching television is a source of entertainment for many people. It is a source of entertainment because people are able to entertain themselves by watching movies, reality programs or series in the comfort of their houses. The truth is the watching television is a source of relaxation for several people; however, it is also important to understand the presence that television has on children’s lives. A study shows that children ages from 2 to 5 years spend 32 hours watching television, and many other electronic devices. (Boyse, 2010). Furthermore, it is important to understand that the ones who love to watch television more than anyone else are the children. In part this is because they follow the same behavior as their parents and siblings when they have one, but it is also due to that fact that television is now creating
... for children. Children are exposed to 20,000 advertisements a year. The average child watches 8,000 televised murders and 100,000 acts of violence before finishing elementary school. By the time children graduate from high school, those numbers more than doubles. Furthermore, television is shown to influence attitudes about race and gender. Pro-social and anti-social behaviors are influenced by television.
Television has become one of the major entertainment providers in our modern life. It sits in the living room of about almost every home in the world and it is the one thing that most people like to come home to after a long day of work or school. Not only does it give us something to laugh or get scared at but it also provides us with valuable information about what is happening around our local community and around different places in the world. But, as good as this sounds, Television may be affecting us without even realizing it.
