Identity is like a lock. The only way to find out what is on the other side is to find the keys. There are many ways identity can be created, and many people try to describe identity such as the following authors: Guy de Maupassant’s, “The Necklace”, Sherman Alexie’s, “Superman and Me”, ABC News’, “More Facebook Friends, Less Real Ones” , and “Mirror Stage”, by CommonLit Staff. There are two keys that are absolutely necessary to unlocking identity: one’s surroundings and one’s outer appearance.
One way that one’s identity is formed it by his/her surroundings. As one lives life, he/she gains influences from others around them. As shown in Sherman Alexie’s “Superman and Me”, Alexie says, “My father loved books, and since I loved him with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well” (1). Since his father loved books and Alexie loved books, Alexie has been influenced by his father who is part of Alexie’s surroundings. Later in Alexie’s story, he shows that as a native american, he is expected and ceremonially accepted if he fails school (1). His culture was a big influence on his identity because he did not want to fail school, so he defied the expectation of failure. One’s surroundings influence his/her actions, which lead to how a person might see one as, and one’s outer appearance should be true and make him/ her feel confident to help show his/ her true identity. However, why should one care what his/her identity is like? How does it benefit him/her? The real question is, how can one make his/her identity better? Or why is one’s identity important? The answers to those questions are completely decided by one who decides what he/she wants to change. That one person can change himself or herself forever, or let the world change him/her
