The history of Chinese literature, from the perspective of gender study, represents a male-centric narrative most of the time. Men are usually the protagonists of stories and historical documentations while women serving as peripheral characters who are given less attention by the authors. However, since Tang Dynasty, discussion around female gender has become a popular theme that is preferred by male authors. At the same time, more female authors has emerged and brought a fresh standpoint to the Chinese literal history. We consider the representation of female an important theme of discussion because how gender is viewed at a certain point of history relates closely to the social perspectives and culture at the time. The understanding of gender can be resulted from numerous social or humanistic factors, including the dominant religion and philosophy. Confucianism, considered the most influential philosophical and ethical system throughout the Chinese history, is without doubt one of the most important shaping forces over Chinese literal works about women and gender. Comprised a set of morals and behavioral standards for female, Confucianism encourages a patriarchal social system that largely limits what women can do and express. This paper will
examine the difference in perspectives and values between the works of both gender and seek to argue that Confucianism is the fundamental reason for this difference.

(1800)Topic 2: A Literary Analysis of the Historical Differentiation of Patriarchal Culture and Female Gender Identity in the Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong and the Tale of Genji
Some of the more fascinating documents of the Han period in ancient China were arguably those written by women. The writings were at once contradictory due to the fact that they appeared to destroy the common perceptions of women as uneducated and subservient creatures while simultaneously delivering messages through the texts that demonstrated a strict adherence to traditional values. Those are the paradoxical characteristics of prominent female scholar Ban Zhou’s work called Lesson for a Woman. Because modern opinions on the roles of women in society likely cloud the clear analysis of Zhou’s work, it is necessary to closely examine the Han’s societal norms and popular beliefs that contributed to establishing the author’s perspective and intent.
The united States Declaration of independence states that all men are equal, but aren’t all women as well? Nowadays, the numbers for the population are at an increase for the support in gender equality, with the capture of feminist labels. The seek for equality between men and women, and criticize the privileges that arouse by gender differences. However in Old China, males control almost everything due to a patriarchal society. At that time, not only men, but also women are influenced by male chauvinism. In the Jade Peony, written by Wayson Choy, female characters are affected by an unequal perspective despite their age group.
She composed her work during the period in which Confucian scholar set the standard for relationships between ruler and ruled as well as husband and wife. Confucianism rose during the Zhou dynasty, centuries before the rise of the Han empire. The reoccurring theme in Confucianism are the five cardinal relationships, which existed with the goal of restoring social and political order. When looking at the relationships a common theme is found of them being of subordinate fashion, with elders and men especially being of higher ranks (Harding 03/01/2017). Although the harmony of human relationships was well established, little existed on women’s standing in society. By writing Lessons for a Woman, Ban Zhao looked to fill the void of the female role in the male focused Confucian literature. However, she knew her place as a woman, which she depicts in the beginning of her work by saying, “I, the unworthy writer, am unsophisticated, unenlightened, and by nature unintelligent” (Andrea). Interestingly, Ban Zhao was considered the most educated woman of her time, yet she portrayed her role as being at the bottom of the social hierarchy, which portrays the significant impact the Confucian scholar had on every-day

Confucianism is a philosophy and way of life formed in China by Confucius, an early Chinese philosopher. It began as a simple concept with ideals of personal virtue, simple filial piety, and basic gender distinctions and social inequalities. But, over time with the emergence of Neo-Confucianism it began to transform into a way of life that was degrading towards women with certain hostilities towards rivaling religions. In its early period, from around 500 B.C.E to the Common Era, Confucianism changed in that it became the leading belief system and a major part of Chinese tradition. From the transition into the Common Era to the end of the Classical time period, Confucianism was altered because of a loss of popularity following the collapse of the Han dynasty and the corruption in the governing political system. In its ending period, the post-classical era, Confucianism underwent perhaps its biggest adjustments with the emergence of Neo-Confucianism. According to Confucian philosophy, a family that is run well demonstrates that the state is also governed well. Confucianism philosophy was upheld, demonstrating a patriarchal society with a great emphasis on societal class and rigid gender lines, traditions and customs with a heavy emphasis on male heirs to continue the legacy of a family. Comparing Li Ang’s novel, The Butcher’s Wife and Zhang Yimou’s movie, Raise the Red Lantern, Confucian philosophy is clearly represented and shown and the leading female characters battle the oppression forced upon them due to their inability to support themselves. Because Confucian philosophy implies women and daughters are treated as objects instead of human beings, daughters are raised as objects to barter and are never given the chance to learn to gain independence. Without independence, women are forced to depend on their fathers and or their husbands without a choice in whatever matter. Men in a patriarchal society victimize women and oppression of women is largely affected by the socio-economic structure of a male-dominated society. Some say, in order for women to become liberated in a male dominated society, they must gain economic stability. In my opinion, due to the socio-economic settings of many of the works we have read, the female characters do not necessarily need the financial stability to receive their freedom; these women utilize their own mind and bodies to gain power and liberation. The oppression of women can be better explained using Jean-Paul Sartre’s theory of existentialism and Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism theory.
Lessons for Women was written by Ban Zhao, the leading female Confucian scholar of classical China, in 100 C.E. It was written to apply Confucian principles to the moral instruction of women, and was particularly addressed to Ban Zhao’s own daughters. As her best remembered work, it allows the reader insight into the common role of a woman during this fascinating time-period. The work starts off by Ban Zhao unconvincingly berating herself, and claiming how she once lived with the constant fear of disgracing her family. This argument is rather implausible, for the reader already knows the credibility of Ban Zhao, and how important her role was in ancient China.

In discussing the Chinese dynasty’s and during the Han Dynasty, Ban Baio, a famous Chinese historian, wrote “Lessons for a Woman,” (200-300 CE) outlining the position and duties of women in society. As time changed and civilization emerged, so did history as it began to bel less biblical and more focused on social change. In order to analyze how gender ideals in the Heian society were formulated and how they were expressed in the Genji Monogatari, it is necessary to have an understanding of the Chinese society from which they were derived. The Chinese works often alluded to in the Genji Monogatari are primarily from the Tang dynasty period of China(618-907AD), which formed the basis of the flourishing of Japanese culture during the Heian period.3 Therefore, an analysis of Heian gender ideals must begin from the Tang dynasty court-life culture.
