Have these readings changed your conceptualization of community? Of leadership? If so, how?
1These literatures that I have reviewed have not changed my mind, they just reaffirm my beliefs. Especially with the mention of the multi-community efforts found in Wilkinson (1992) journal article, it reminded me of Social Disorganization Theory. SDT can be seen as a consequence of disruptions, as a result of high rates of mobility and persons’ moving in and out of the community. This phenomena is defined by Borski (1985) as the “capacity of a neighborhood to regulate itself through formal and informal control". Leaders of their respective community need to pay attention to the Ethnic Heterogeneity [E.H], Residential Mobility [R.S] and the Low Socioeconomic Status [SES] of their town and residences. These three structural factors lead to the community social organization [CSO] being disrupted, which in turn leads to criminality and delinquency further disrupting community leadership.
If community leaders do not take social disorganization [S.D] into consideration, in order to avoid managing and maintaining a community that is on the brink of a civil war or/and bankruptcy. S.D is the non-recognizability of community structure and lack of common values of community residents, as it would and is up to the residents to maintain social control [Piggy-banking on Wilkinson (1992) Community ‘Individualism’ approach]. There are Informal social networks that can be found in any community, e.g. friendship ties. As well as Formal control such as organization participation [O.P], these controls can aid creating a sense of community oneness, thereby reducing criminality. ... The lack of funding, which impacts effective leadership trickled down to the residences of these areas. I gather from the Garkovich (1999) paper; Biology, History, Criminal Justice and Philosophy: can and do work hand in and hand, to help mold and dictate how leaders operate and how the community is being led. Bureaucracy is an important element of ‘Leadership’ within a community; examples of these are in-service training, de-of-discipline and hierarchy structure of the agency amongst several others
To summarize from my previous knowledge, combined with the readings, there is no right way to lead. Managers need to take into account individual approaches to management, and decision making and possible changes in leadership and laws. Leaders need to challenge and protect their staff and constituents, retain control and stay firm when changing laws or policies.
