The Influence Factors on Mode Choice Preference Case Study: Paratransit in Jakarta, Indonesia

Informal transport system (i.e. angkot, kancil, ojek, bemo, and bajaj) plays a significant role in the development of Jakarta as metropolitan city, meeting the need for mobility on public transport demand. Contextual to developing countries, high population density, high mobility demand, low income and living standard, have influence in determining the mode choice preference (Cervero, 2000). While the use of public transit recognized still developed and poor performance, therefore users still prefer to use informal transport as transport choice in their daily life since cheaper, door to door service. Moreover, traffic congestion, long queue line and unefficient route of BRT system, making users tend to use paratransit or other informal transport rather than public transits (Joewono and Kubota 2007).
Paratransit service, as one of popular modes transport in Jakarta serve diverse users, provide flexible and frequent services in varying routes from near to far distance. However, the service quality of paratransit in most developing countries undoubtedly demand on refinement (Ferro et al. 2012). Therefore, regulatory efforts on paratransit are tremendously needed to provide better services for society (Cervero, 2000). Furthermore, the author use the term paratransit in this report which refer to transport services that is owned and operated by local company and individuals.
The aims of this study is twofold. First, it will delivered some facts about the development of paratransit as one of popular ground transportation in Jakarta.
