Despite the great lengths society has overcome in regards to gender inequality, social issues regarding the difference between men and women still exist. Women in today’s society still continually earn less than men in almost every single occupation. Women were given the right to vote in 1919, yet in 2016 they still have not achieved full equality in comparison to their male counterparts. Gender equality related to equal pay is concerning not only in my own community, but the entire nation. Analyzing the earning of men vs. women reveal women earning only 79% of what a man earns in the same occupation. The issue at hand is shocking considering that women have transitioned throughout history, leaving behind the stereotypes of stay at home moms and have become CEO’s, business owners, and more. In “Exploiting the Gender Gap” Warren Farrell argues that the issue of disparity between men and women’s wages does not exist. Farrell provides multiple statistics and research that contradict the ever prominent “fact” put out by the media that women are paid less than men. He then covers a range of personal examples that strengthen his argument. He, subsequently, moves beyond the simplicity of wage disparity and brings the focus of his attention to the focus on discrimination.
The reality of wage differences between men and women is that above all changes women continue to earn less than men. After some research, we think it’s not fair that women make less than men who have the same education and the same job. In the long run, it can make it hard for women to support their families. Each employee sharing their salary will allow women to detect if they are earning less than their male colleagues with little difficulty. In 2009, female FTYR earned 77% (0.77) as much as the FTYR male workers (US Census Bureau, 2013). It is proven women are paid less than the same job performed by others. This creates women to lose their self esteem and self confidence. With unequal pay, especially for women, this causes less buying power and less savings for the future. In today’s society, Women perform similar jobs to men. Whether it’s blue or white collar jobs, women are always present and thriving for success balancing a life of business and family. In the job market, some are graduates of the best schools and have interned at the best firms, but are still not compensated as equally as men. Following the recent comments by the CEO of Microsoft concerning women asking for raises and how they should trust the system to install equality, the issue seems to be still present, and women’s work is not rewarded similarly to men’s.
Despite government regulations to promote equality within the workplace, women’s salaries continue to lag behind males in similar career with similar experiences. According to research performed by Blau & Kahn (2007) “women salaries averaged about 60% of men’s until the 1970s and rose to nearly 80% by the 1990s” (as cited in Bendick, Jr. & Nunes, 2012, p.244). Today, women on average earn approximately $.81 for every dollar that men earn in the United States (Guy and Fenley P.41 2014).
In today’s society, it is an understatement that women have come a long way from earlier generations in achieving gaining equal rights with men. Gender roles have evolved greatly throughout history; women can even be known as the breadwinners. However, discrepancies still exist when it comes to equal pay for equal work. This issue has the potential to have an impact on all women including myself, as I hope to one day join the workforce and become a financially independent businesswoman. While some argue that the issue is not relevant to today’s society there are still cases where women’s pay does not match up to men for doing the exact same work.
Women have made great strides in the workplace, but still inequality persists. The average, women only makes 77 cents to every dollar a man earns. Needless to say, there’s a gender gap that needs to be rectified. Women have caught up with men in terms of education. In fact, in the United States and a number of other countries, women now actually exceed men in educational achievement. Obviously, there is not a problem with female achievement. The problem is, however, that women are significantly underpaid and sometimes excluded from obtaining certain jobs just for being a woman. While there are many solutions to this problem it is best to tackle the initial foundation of this gender segregation in the workforce – the jobs themselves. Employers need to promote gender equality as well as enforce it in order for women to obtain job titles that are generally given to men; however, it is the woman's job to prove that she can be just as successful in that field of work as a man, and deserves equal pay as a result.
