On February 06, 2001 a bill was introduced by the Government of India targeting media advertisements of tobacco products. The intent was to eliminate the tobacco industry from advertising to children and young adults, stating such advertisements encouraged smoking. The government believed it had a responsibility to arm itself in the fight against tobacco products by creating an Anti-Tobacco Campaign. This sparked a heated debate over the role government played in a person 's right to chose, and whether it was even possible to implement successfully. (Ban, n.d.)
The India Tobacco Company fired back by withdrawing all advertisements and support from sponsored events stating, “The legislation has not thought this thing through.” The India Tobacco Company released a statement, “ITC believes that this action on its part will create the right climate for a constructive dialogue that will help develop appropriate content, rules & regulations to make the intended legislation equitable and implementable". (Ban, n.d.)
The battle lines were drawn. The Government viewed this action as a way of responsibly looking out for the welfare of it 's people. From their perspective, tobacco is a dangerous threat for consumers as it 's maker 's intended. Therefore, the Government was responsible for assuming the role of a “scolding parent” and monitoring the welfare of it 's people. In contrast this industry had contributed largely to the government and the economy. India is the third largest distributor of tobacco products, and employs over 26 million workers. The opposition claimed the government was overstepping by interfering on a person 's right to chose. (Ban, n.d.)

When government steps in and tells me what I can and cannot do to my body, despite the risks involved, I feel as though my personal freedom of choice is being violated. Is there wiggle room for compromise? I believe in a person 's right to choose. I believe in freedom, but I also believe it is the responsibility of the government to educate and protect it 's citizens.
If the decision were up to me, I would agree with placing restrictions on types of media and content to be marketed. However, I would also promote educational ad campaigns warning of the dangers of smoking. There is currently a strong campaign to quit smoking here in the United States that I believe is proving to be effective. As a member of society we should have the freedom to choose, but also the information to make an informed decision.
