Hong Kong has it all. It is perhaps one of the world’s most amazing and most important economic cities. Being located in China on 22° 18' N 114° 10' E, it puts the city right in the middle of Japan and Singapore, and also on many shipping and air routes of the western Pacific. Hong Kong did not become a successful city overnight. It was a British dependency dating back to the 1842 to July 1, 1997. The First Opium War forced China to give Hong Kong to the British. A British-appointed governor headed Hong Kong’s government and military affairs. In 1984 Britain and China signed the Sino-British Joint Declaration, and agreed that Hong Kong return to Chinese rule in 1997 as the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. The Joint Declaration and a Chinese law called the Basic Law, which followed in 1990, provide for the SAR to operate with a high degree of economic independence for 50 years beyond 1997.
Hong Kong grew slowly during the 19th century. There were about 100,000 people in the 1900s. The territory grew more rapidly in the 20th century when employment in Hong Kong’s developing light industries attracted Chinese immigrants. Hong Kong’s greatest growth and development took place after the Communist takeover of China in 1949, when the commercial and shipping functions of Guangzhou and Shanghai changed to Hong Kong. Hong Kong served as China’s key to success to the world during the Chinese administration of Mao Zedong. After Mao’...

For instance, English is the official language, both in Singapore and Hong Kong. Moreover, Singapore and Hong Kong both became international financial and economic centers. The new technology, education systems and the Enlightenment ideas introduced by the British built a bridge between their past to their irreplaceable positions in the modern world. Yet, Singapore and China suffered severe economic distress for years. Also, the hardship of Chinese and Singapore citizens under the era of imperialism was inestimable. Imperialism could not be praised or blamed. It is the product of historical background and complex relationships among
The imperial realms of East Asia before the 19th century were largely based on the theory that Asian countries were far better than their neighbors in the West. The nonchalant manner portrayed by East Asian countries towards western technology and culture led China to become unknowledgeable of the Western empires. As a result, China was astonishingly impacted by imperialism from Great Britain during the 1800’s. During the 18th century Great Britain had set up trade off the coast of the Chinese borders to trade British silver for China’s soft silks, fine porcelain, and strong teas. During this period Qing officials overlooked the foreign brokers. By the early 1800’s, however, Great Britain b...

Singapore as a country has had various transformations throughout its history, however the period 1950 and 1970 was quite critical. Much of these changes had a lot to do with the development of trade and manufacturing. This is without forgetting the financial sector where the intention was to come up with a financial hub that could be used in economic development. Looking at the case of Singapore, we would say that it is a productive economy with a very high market competition. This observation has been further clarified by the Swiss International Institute for Management Development, going with their report that they released in the year 2001 (Chellaraj & Mattoo, 2009). In this study, we intend to evaluate the case of political economy of development in Singapore and examine the tensions between the state and various economic institutions. In additions to examining this institution, we would also like to examine how these variables have contributed towards the attainment of favorable growth rates and economic prosperity.
Settled in the end of the fifth century, two groups established themselves in what is now present day Cambodia. The Champa controlled the central and southern part of Vietnam and the Funan is the southernmost part Vietnam and present-day Cambodia. Ruling on its own till 1864 when the French absorbed it into French Indochina Along with Laos and Vietnam. For nearly a century, the French exploited Cambodia commercially, and demanded power over politics, economics, and social life. It was not until a leader Norodom Sihanouk proclaimed Cambodia's independence in 1949 which was later granted in 1953. Cambodia fell into chaos during the 1970’s as General Lon Nol and his connections to the Khmer Rouge brought Cambodia into a genocidal age. For a decade Cambodia was surrounded by despair and carnage until the reign of the Khmer Rouge ended in 1979. Slowly rebuilding of the nation began as outside countries and organization such as the United Nation helped to get Cambodia back on its feet. Plans were made for general elections by 1993 which lead to the constitutional monarchy that the country has today. With its cyclical and oppressive history, Cambodia future is optimistic with the economy growing rapidly due to industries such as tourism, textiles, oil and the traditional farming. Slowly the nation reaches to find its place among the other powerhouses in Southeast Asia and around the world.
By 1971, the Cultural Revolution in China had ended in failure and conditions in Hong Kong calmed,” Gloria Lannom states, yet it took a while for Hong Kong to rebuild its economic standings because of this fact.
When you associate anything with New York City it is usually the extraordinary buildings that pierce the sky or the congested sidewalks with people desperate to shop in the famous stores in which celebrities dwell. Even with my short visit there I found myself lost within the Big Apple. The voices of the never-ending attractions call out and envelop you in their awe. The streets are filled with an atmosphere that is like a young child on a shopping spree in a candy store. Although your feet swelter from the continuous walking, you find yourself pressing on with the yearning to discover the 'New York Experience'.
Hazardous waste and its proper disposal have become a major sociological problem today due to its capability of contaminating the area in which we live and its potential to be lethal to all living things. In order for the United States and the rest of the world to save itself from a potentially life threatening problem they must fix the causes which lead to the improper disposal of hazardous wastes and like materials. Some reasons that hazardous waste has become a problem in the United States today is due to the breakdown in enforcing laws for the proper disposal of such wastes, a lack of initiative on big companies behalf to spend money on proper disposal, and the ease of disposing of such wastes illegally.
A big effect Landfills have on the environment is that they are taking up significant amounts of space. As landfills keep being added the world is going to reach its capacity sooner than later. In an article by Linda Tufano she states that “The National Waste & Recycling Association’s Begin With the Bin FAQ stated, "On a national level, the United States has 20 years of disposal capacity." (2015) 20 years of disposable capacity is not that much and when earth reaches full capacity life in earth will be hard to substation. Although this infomation may be an exageration sometimes its needed to get ones attention. The biggest effect landfills have on the environment is land pollution. Landfills cause destruction to earth’s surfaces and soil. This according to Rinkesh “...lessens the quality and/or productivity of the land as an ideal place for agriculture, forestation, construction etc…”. (2016) With the quality of earth's soil and agriculture land lessening comes many more concerns. Such as lack of available land to properly grow plants or raise cattle, which would soon become food for humans to eat. Without the ability to create food in a healthy manner human life may be in a disaster. A healthy environment is needed for humans to strive- not just humans but plants and animals as well. Land pollution has become one of the more serious concerns that people need to began collectively
