Surprisingly numbers of inmates in prisons are for non-violent drug related charges. They are removed from the society and locked up in prison/jail without getting any drug addiction treatment. After they are released from prison or jail, they face several challenges, such as no job, broken family and no family support, no adequate housing or homeless, and mental health issues. These challenges without addiction treatment never brake their cycle of going to prison. Prison becomes their primary place to live because they never learn to survive in society. Most of the former inmates tend to have limited job skills and poor employment history. When coupled with a criminal record, these deficits can lead to exponential challenges in finding or keeping a job (Batastini, Bolanos, & Morgan, 2014). Employers are reluctant to hire people with drug addiction and criminal record. I feel it should be the state’s responsibility to release inmate/people in better condition than they came in jail or prison. This involves teaching them about making better choices about their life during rehabs in prison. Some colleges and Washington State Department of Corrections are looking into broaden educational available to prisons. Community colleges will build the bridges for inmates to successfully re-enter communities. These students can earn GED certificates, vocational certificates and associate degree. The Washington State Department of Corrections (WA DOC) houses, feeds, clothes, and provides a variety of programs for more than 17,000 incarcerated men and women in the twelve state prisons (Washington Department of Corrections, n.d). The principle purpose of this, engaging inmates in work related training and education will create a safer and more successful treatment model of rehabilitation.
