Values are the cornerstone of a community’s morality. They are a set of norms and regulations that society expects its members to adhere to. A societies members share a common culture that is passed down thru the generations. Culture is dependent on a capacity for learning; the characteristics of every society change gradually over the generations thru the innovations introduced thru its community members. An emphasis on core values such as family, education, freedom and will improve the quality of life of a communities citizens.
Freedom was ranked as the most important value amongst my fellow American Society group 4 members. The overall consensus on freedom is that people have the right to choose. A comparison of the ideas the group had about freedom involved the right to be independent and have rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, and access to information. Freedom was considered an opportunity to make decisions and to have the ability to choose ones path in life. One group member detailed that valuing freedom is valuing our country. Another member found that freedom affords choices specifically in the area of religious beliefs. An underlying factor of freedom was individualism and the right to be one’s own person. Freedom is a fundamental right for all Americans. It is important that a population is not only independent but also self-sufficient from state assistance programs. It is imperative that people have access to services and information in order for society’s members to be able to function. ...om an exclusive right in America allows people to be independent and affords people rights. Heightening awareness of the importance of these values can relay beneficially into the future as their usefulness can transcend time.

Throughout history, Americans have sought to spread the spirit of equality, which is believed to be the realization of true freedom. Before establishing this freedom, every American had only one question stuck in their head: What is freedom? Our country received it in the year of 1776 from the British through a series of difficulties and wars. African Americans defined it as an escape from slavery, while immigrants defined it as their acceptance into a new society. More yet, women of the women’s suffrage defined their freedom as their recognition into society and for their rights to be equal to that of every other man. These different perceptions of cultures/groups in America tied together to form an American view of freedom. Freedom is something that every American should be willing to do anything in order to maintain. We may have weapons of mass destruction, but when it comes to living in a peaceful, American lifestyle, our freedom is our greatest weapon.
Few issues will motivate Americans to put down their cheeseburgers and pick up a shotgun faster than the threat of infringement upon their civil liberties. The right to choose what toothpaste to buy, what color socks to wear with those sandals, or what spiritual doctrine to follow, is fiercely defended by both conservatives and liberals alike. In fact, this commitment to personal liberty is what defines us as Americans, and sets us apart from the rest of the world (even if only in our own minds). This attitude is embodied in our presidential rhetoric:
Whenever an author is creating an argument, they must appeal to whatever grabs his or her selected audience’s attention.When given the topic of Michael Fay, an 18 year old American citizen who was punished in Singapore for vandalism by being caned, two sources appealed to their audience in two contrasting ways. The values that society cherishes gives protection to the people that live in it. Each society values something different like some value equality, religion, and freedom of speech. The importance of these values is to let people have there own freedom. People also base their decisions off of values.
Since the beginning of humanity, a large part of humankind’s focus was directed towards survival. A person’s primary function is to survive and reproduce. As society progresses the the more contemporary of what is expected today, success has become jointed with how an individual works with others and less on how much they achieve by themselves. Mencken wrote that “the average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe.” In comparison to modern beliefs this notion is quite true. The average American may say they love freedom, but just what kind of freedom are they talking about? For the majority, what they mean is that they want a safe environment where people can do what they want within reason and not bring about harm or discomfort
Values some take for granted within this society today were ignored wholesale by a tyrannical colonial authority, and the people of this land rose up, shook off the chains of oppression, and set out to devise a new governmental system under which they could live rather freely. In his iconic “Four Freedoms” speech, America’s 32nd president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, outlined said values, stating that all should enjoy “freedom of speech and expression...freedom...to worship God in [their] own way” and “ a healthy peacetime life” (46). The importance of the concept of free speech and equality to the American identity cannot be understated, as it truly the foundation upon which much of this society rests. In the United states, it is instilled in us that from birth each human is bestowed with the same freedoms as all others. However, time and time again, people are denied these freedoms on the basis of skin color, religion, sexual orientation, or gender. Luckily, when such situations arise, the core belief that each and every person is owed liberty motivates the citizens of this nation to exercise their rights. The culture of a community invariably determines the social structures and the formation of a society. Developed over time, culture is the collection of beliefs and values that a group of people maintain together. Culture is never constant, and thought to be continually renewed over years as new ideas and concepts become mainstream. It ranges from how people live, day to day topics for conversations, religion, and even entertainment. It is analogous to guidelines, or the rulebook of the said group of people. Society, on the other hand, emanates from the social structure of the community. It is the very institutions to which create a regulated and acceptable form of interaction between peoples. In many ways each individual is granted their rights and freedom today, but the unfortunate truth is all the leisure’s we have, including freedom, was a nearly a myth in the early Americas or the so called land proclaimed to be “the land of the free”.
American freedom has faced many tribulations, especially throughout the slavery, segregation, and women’s suffrage eras. However, the ideological belief of individual freedom has always triumphed. From when the first Pilgrim stepped onto American soil to the present day America has been run by a democracy and the freedom that system of government allows its peoples to have. “Americans share a common identity grounded in the freedom — consistent always with respecting the freedom of others — to live as they choose” (Friedman).
Many personal values are sacrificed in order to maintain freedom in the country. Freedom is kept by fighting against enemies in wars. Wars take a tremendous toll on the people in the country. Many of the things sacrificed for freedom are people’s lives, freedom, money, health, and emotions.
R.E.M. ....Religious, educational and moral values. These are the three values that affect society today the most, I think. Society may look down on people if they do not live by what society thinks is correct. For example if a persons values are corrupt then society will look down on that person, but if a person has real high morals then society will think that they are fake of just a “goodie”. In society today you will be looked down anyway your moral beliefs are.

Moral Values are the the basic part of a human being. Good values make a good and a better person. In this huge world many people are connected to their moral values and as well as cultures. Every human being has their own set of values which they embrace and have a strong bond with them. Just like every other people I Have my own set of values which is most essential part of me and makes me a better person. The Values which are important for me are love,care, and truth.
Values are important and lasting beliefs or ideals that can be shared by the members of a culture about what is good or bad and desirable or undesirable. The culture of a country is a set of norms that set standards for a society of what is acceptable behavior and is important to the future of the country, instilling the correct values to the children is of utmost importance. Three values a teacher can reflect when developing strategies towards the cultural growth of our country are respect, responsibility and integrity.
Values, norms and culture are essential to society’s survival. Roles and standards give groups within a society structure and allow members to know what’s expected of them, socially. As a teacher, parent or leader of a group, you’re expected to teach the group to be conventional and conform to society. It is basic human nature to have the desire to pass on our own values, norms and culture to our kids and/or those we are in command of. We often resort to educating them based on values we’ve been taught by society.
