The aim of the article was to prove the importance of therapeutic relationships between health professionals and service users during their recovery of involuntary treatment orders (ITO’s). “Therapeutic relationships are the central activity of mental health nursing. They are the foundation upon which all other activities are based.” (Elder, Evans, & Nizette, 2009, p. 6)

Researches decided upon a qualitative research method, as apparent from the sample size (25 persons) and characteristics (varied). Participants for this study were all admitted to hospital under ITO. Several key ideas from the article can be transferred as a limitation in nursing practice. First off, many of the complaints from service users in the article came from a frustration of the lack of time nurses were able to spend with each client. While it’s acknowledged that they are busy, but this is a real life concern worldwide. We suffer from a nursing shortage.
Management can also affect nursing application. Recovery approaches differ per institution, with some making dignity of risk a focus, while some may prefer the risk aversion approach. The latter potentially impacting on the ability to form a therapeutic relationship.
Furthermore, client’s stories were taken at face value. Their experiences were not crossed referenced with health professionals, so it’s hard to confirm that all statements were the actual
