In today’s schooling system most high school students are required to take at least 2 to 4 years of a foreign language in order to graduate. However, some people do not understand the importance of taking a different language, until it is time to get a job or while they are in their current job. It is significant that we take at least 2 years of a foreign language in both high school and college and try to learn as much as possible because learning a new language can open up so many doors. While I was in high school, I took Japanese as a foreign language from 8th grade to 10th grade year, and I could have taken Japanese up to 12th grade, but I moved to a different state. Being a bilingual person in today’s workforce makes it fairly easy to get a job because there are companies that need people that speak multiple languages. In addition, in college there are language courses that also allow student to study abroad and to visit other countries based on which language it is, and I would consider that networking because it would allow me to expand my knowledge on the cultural and the people (professors). Nowadays, employers are waiting to hire people that speak any language other than English because there are tourist, foreigners and just people that cannot fully understand the English language, so they need translators and that is where the bilingual workers step in to play their part. For example, while I was employed at the “Harlem Hospital Corporation”, there were foreigners, tourist and people that did not understand the English language, and I would have to call for a translator or use the phone that translated for me, but it became frustrating for the patients because of how long the wait was, and most of the time the patient had already been sent to multiple workers within the different departments.
