Creating a positive and enthusiastic school environment is a basic priority for school leaders. Principals must ensure that they stay passionate for their work because “passion is contagious and sets the tone for the entire organization” (Berg, 2012, p. 8). A principal who celebrates the little classroom triumphs of the rookie teacher or offers support or assistance to the teacher with the difficult class is modeling a love for the profession, which will encourage the staff and create a positive school climate. It is important to realize that the climate of a school goes beyond the staff and includes the students and their parents or guardians. Two major factors that principals must ensure are in place for meaningful professional development are sufficient funding and appropriate time as required by each specific project (Donaldson, 2013, pp. 861-862). Both of these factors can be difficult to obtain, so it is imperative that educational leaders have a firm understanding of the importance of each factor and an ability to articulate the importance to the appropriate officials. Additionally, since factors such as school size and administrative duties can make it challenging, principals need to be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of their teachers, in order to establish helpful professional development (Donaldson, 2013, p. 867). Although many challenges exist, helping teachers pursue appropriate professional development is an important task of every principal.
