Throughout the world, missions are taking place, changing lives forever and for the better. As people serve in various places of the world, they can learn a lot, not only about themselves but also about how one person can truly make a difference in another person’s life. There are many groups and organizations out there that travel together and share their stories with the world. All God’s Children is a group that travels to various third-world countries to help children in orphanages. They stay with the children in, generally, worn-down buildings or huts, with no indoor pluming or running water. Sharing how their experiences have impacted their lives, express the hardships of the children and suffering they go through, and sharing the Word of the gospel are only a few of the things most organizations do among many others such as branching out into local communities.
Inspirational speaker, Steve Maraboli states, “You were not made for a mundane or mediocre life.” This applies to doing mission trips and helping others around the world. Breaking out of your comfort zone and being involved in a life changing experience, will not only be a positive change in you, the missionary’s life, but the people you are serving and in need as well. Hearing stories of others and how their lives have been impacted gives a new outlook on life and can inspire others to go out and make a difference. All over the world there are opportunities to help others that are ‘field specific’ to what you are best at. Even in your local communities, you have the opportunities to help those around you. Joining local clubs or even creating your own will help others come out and join to make a difference.

Missions don’t always have to be served worldwide. Serving in local communities can make a big impact in lives just like traveling can. There are homes in every local community that could use a new roof or a deck that would serve as doing missions and it’s not far from home. Joining with Red Cross and volunteering with disasters or in orphanages are types of volunteer work out there. Smaller ways could be starting a club at school to help those in need in the community, volunteering at a hospital, or even being babysitting instructor. This site helped me in knowing that you don’t have to travel and gave me the information to know what you can do in your local community.

If someone was to ask me two years ago what I wanted to be I would have greeted them with silence. Before I was a very anti-social person and I didn’t really like speaking much in front of a public, audience, or even my small group of friends. I was the type of girl who preferred staying home in the weekends and watch Netflix instead of going out. But everything changed when I went on a missionary trip with my church to Mexicali. The church I attend has a group of volunteers who go every 2-3 months on the weekends to Mexicali. In these trips we distribute clothes, food, essentials, toys, and candies for all the kids and people in Mexico that live in poverty. Many people who live there live in harsh conditions and are struggling to provide a home for their families. My first trip was a life changing experience because it changed the person who I was. I became an active and outgoing person. I became to appreciate and value the possessions I have at home. Every time I see the kids at Mexicali content when they receive a pair of shoes or a piece sandwich it makes me pleased of myself because I’m able to help them with what I can. Throughout these series of trips I discover my passion and how I have a soft spot for kids. I spent every spring and summer in middle school doing mission work and community service. I loved the opportunity that it gave me to build relationships and share my beliefs with people I didn’t know. Little did I know that this would pave the way for a life-changing experience that I would encounter one day. Each spring my church would host a missionary event called “The Ignite Project.” I felt an urge to join the group, recognizing that it was a calling to profess my faith in Jesus. When Christy was 16 years old, she went to a church camp with other young adults and teens. While she was there, altar-calls were made daily for the kids to go up and give their lives to God and to missions. On the last night, Christy sat in the very back, knowing that the push for missions would be stronger than ever. She sat back there and bowed her head and prayed and before she knew it she was up front, giving her life to Jesus and His calling to missions. To this day, her and her friends don't know how she got up to the front. None of them remember her walking across the room and none of them saw her do it. But even then, Christy still didn't think of doing missions for her whole life. She told me, "I made a deal with God that I would go on a short-term mission and then I would be done with missions altogether." Of course,
As Catholics, we profess a universal church; encountering Christ brings with it the responsibility of reaching out to those on the peripheries. This service and need to bring with us the joy of the Gospel to all starts with those around us who are overlooked and reaches to the furthest ends of the globe. As missionary disciples, we must make the Universal Church a presence at the peripheries; for example, we help persecuted Christians in Egypt, homeless and displaced civilians in Ukraine, child refugees from North Korea, typhoon survivors in the Philippines, flood victims in Mexico and people with physical disabilities in Vietnam, Cuba, and Haiti.

Having a relationship with people is more important to me than just doing the work. Doing something for someone or helping with something and also doing missionary work I will ask people to join to accomplish the goal together and to have the best possible outcomes as a group instead of an individual.
My eyes were open within section two to the work of the Gospel within other cultures. I would apply the lessons learned through the book by focusing on hospitality, reaching out to internationals here in America by inviting them into my house and sharing a meal with internationals. I will also apply the principles in relation to the use of money and the need to do things in ministry which are reproducible by local believers. I would recommend this book to serious students of missions stressing the importance of the case studies which allow individuals interested in missions to apply concepts within real world examples. “The Changing Face of World Missions” is an informative and educational book which should be included on the bookshelf of any serious student of missions.

For the past two summers I have traveled to Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico to work with Spectrum Ministries Inc., serve the city’s people, and share with them the love of Jesus Christ. The summation of people I’ve met, experiences I’ve had, and lessons I’ve been taught has allowed the city a permanent spot in my heart. Going on these mission trips require leaving my family and friends for weeks, leaping out of my comfort zone, and allowing myself to be stretch physically, mentally, and spiritually. In hindsight, giving up the amenities that I have grown so accustomed to having was a minute price to pay for the abundant reward I found in looking into the eyes and hearts of the people of Tijuana. Finally, we concluded by taking a glimpse at mission work within a country, and how mission work must be carried out within hostile countries. So from this we see that God’s mighty work is prevalent even within hostile regions, and that mission work is a necessity for progressing the gospel.
If we open our lives and give service to those less fortunate than ourselves, we allow our hearts to receive immeasurable happiness. When we sacrifice our time to help someone in need, whether it is a great or small need, we become a part of their life and can help alleviate heavy burdens. Making time to help people in need creates opportunities for us to develop new and lasting relationships. Serving our fellowmen allows the best in each of us to shine through and we can become examples to our children.
The churches in the world play a huge role in the determination to access of food, clean water, and shelter. No matter what religious affiliation, people will donate money to churches to help this growing problem that has arisen.
