The Importance of Leadership and Management Skills in Nursing Leadership and management skills have been and will continue to be two important traits a nurse possessed and demonstrated in her practice. Some terms associated with leadership have been achieving, striving, inspiring, and risking. These terms defined leadership as a process of standing up, taking charge, and achieving a common goal amongst peers to be successful. A person who pertained these characteristics has been known to be a leader. In a group setting a leader acted as a peacemaker, goal setter, information gatherer, and risk taker. Responsibility has played a key role in nursing management because the skill has controlled many specific situations. A nursing manager has always been a person with responsibility due to the fact that they have all their peers counting on them. Nursing managers are held accountable for everything that goes on around them. Peers have looked to people in the manager position as someone who they can rely and count on when they have a problem or were seeking a solution. Without organization a manager position was pointless. The manager has always kept up with costs, inventory, salaries and much more. If a nursing manager had been unorganized, her whole system would have been chaotic. There has always been order and structure when a successful manager has been in charge. Nursing managers that have achieved tasks have demonstrated excellent communication with their peers. Communication has always been important because without discussions groups have been unable to cooperate for their set goals to be achieved. Nursing managers have to have a good sense of direction about themselves, their peers, and their job. Also, she showed she was accountable by never letting one of her peers down when they needed help with a patient at clinical. The student nurse exhibited responsibility when she was assigned different patients at clinical she correctly administered their medications without error. Error in medications has been huge in health care settings, but the student nurse showed she was responsible by double-checking her six rights and watching the patients swallow the pills. Organization was utilized by keeping up with each patient and his or her paperwork. Paperwork has been known to get messy, especially with multiple patients, but the student nurse prevailed and kept her paperwork organized. Communication was the student nurse’s best management skill. The student nurse was and will continue to be an active communicator while interacting with peers and advisors. She demonstrated communication by asking questions and helping others with their issues. Management and leadership are very important skills to have as a baccalaureate nurse. Through this course I was able to identify and understand the different styles of leadership as well as the style that best fits the characteristics I can offer as a member of an interdisciplinary team. After completing the multifactor leadership questionnaire I was able to better understand my strengths and weaknesses. According to Business Dictionary.com, leadership is defined as the individuals who are the leaders in an organization, regarded collectively. It also can be define as the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this. Leadership involves the establishing of a clear vision, sharing the vision with other so that they will follow willingly, providing the needed information, knowledge, and methods to realize the vision and coordinating and balancing the conflicts interests of all members and stakeholders.
Whether it is in healthcare or in a corporate office, leadership is about having a vision and making it into a reality (Parker & Hyrask, 2011). In healthcare with all the changes that are constantly happening it is imperative that our leaders in nursing continue to evolve and continue to prioritize in their nursing units. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
I believe that leadership is not something that you are born with, but that has to be learned over time. You learn to become a leader from watching other leaders, and also from personal experience. People should become leaders; so that they can help others do their best. They should not become leaders for the title and power that may come with leadership. Being a leader does not mean you get to boss people around by telling them what to do. The purpose of a leader is to guide others by encouraging, showing them the way, and by challenging them to do the best that they can do. I learned leadership through personal experience. In high school I played sports and had many class projects to do. My senior year was the first time my school had a soccer program, and I along with two other girls was captains. As we all know, when a group of girls come together, the drama comes too. All three of the captains had to work together and show the girls that if we wanted this program to be a success and grow, they had to work together as well. It was hard at first, but when we encouraged everyone, it worked out better than expected in the end. Also, in my business class, we had a lot of projects that were mostly group projects. During the end of the year, we had a project where we had to make up a new product. My partner and I were both seniors and it was a stressful time with finals, SAT scores, graduation, and trying to become honor graduates. We were tired and just did not want to do another project, but our teacher, Mr. Brace, did not give up on us. He showed us what to do, and encouraged us constantly every day. In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses” (Malloy & Penprase, 2010.) Let’s explore two different leadership styles and discuss how they can enhance or diminish the nursing process.

Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
