The Importance of Leadership and Management Skills in Nursing Leadership and management skills have been and will continue to be two important traits a nurse possessed and demonstrated in her practice. Some terms associated with leadership have been achieving, striving, inspiring, and risking. These terms defined leadership as a process of standing up, taking charge, and achieving a common goal amongst peers to be successful. A person who pertained these characteristics has been known to be a leader. In a group setting a leader acted as a peacemaker, goal setter, information gatherer, and risk taker. Responsibility has played a key role in nursing management because the skill has controlled many specific situations. A nursing manager has always been a person with responsibility due to the fact that they have all their peers counting on them. Nursing managers are held accountable for everything that goes on around them. Peers have looked to people in the manager position as someone who they can rely and count on when they have a problem or were seeking a solution. Without organization a manager position was pointless. The manager has always kept up with costs, inventory, salaries and much more. If a nursing manager had been unorganized, her whole system would have been chaotic. There has always been order and structure when a successful manager has been in charge. Nursing managers that have achieved tasks have demonstrated excellent communication with their peers. Communication has always been important because without discussions groups have been unable to cooperate for their set goals to be achieved. Nursing managers have to have a good sense of direction about themselves, their peers, and their job. Also, she showed she was accountable by never letting one of her peers down when they needed help with a patient at clinical. The student nurse exhibited responsibility when she was assigned different patients at clinical she correctly administered their medications without error. Error in medications has been huge in health care settings, but the student nurse showed she was responsible by double-checking her six rights and watching the patients swallow the pills. Organization was utilized by keeping up with each patient and his or her paperwork. Paperwork has been known to get messy, especially with multiple patients, but the student nurse prevailed and kept her paperwork organized. Communication was the student nurse’s best management skill. The student nurse was and will continue to be an active communicator while interacting with peers and advisors. She demonstrated communication by asking questions and helping others with their issues.
