Integrity is the adherence to moral and ethical principles and is a term that is encorporated into many different aspects of life such as business, relationships, and society (Dictionary.com, 2014). The most important aspect of integrity is its relationship to ethics. Pride et al. (2015) stated that "ethics is the study of right and wrong and of the morality of the choices individuals make." Ethics and integrity both place a great deal of importance on fairness and honesty. While the term integrity is broad, its relationship to ethics and business can help describe its true meaning. There are three factors that affect integrity and ethical behavior. These factors include individual factors, social factors, and opportunity. A better understanding of these factors and the role they play in ethics and business provides a clearer definition of what integrity is (Pride et al., 2015).
Some individuals lack knowledge about what can cause an ethical issue and may act in a certain way because they do not know any better. Personal values is another example of an individual factor that affects ethics because employees moral values influence their business behavior. The third individual factor that plays a big role in integrity and ethics is personal goals '. Both the goals an individual aspires for and how they manage to pursue these goals can have an impact on a business. An example of how individual factors affect integrity within a business would be if there was one employee whose moral values entailed stealing from fellow coworkers and customers. This employee would greatly reduce the integrity of the business and would be promoting an unsafe and hostile work environment (Pride et al.,
Integrity can be defined soundness of moral character or honesty. My parents explained it to me as doing the right thing when no one else is looking. An example of me having integrity is once when I went to the gas station to fill up my car, the pump stated that there was an error and then it allowed me to fill my car with gas, without paying. I went inside to try to pay for my gas. I was running tight on time because I had to go to work, but I waited in line and then explained to the cashier what had happened. She thanked me for staying to pay for the gas, and said that I really could have driven off without paying. I did not think of it at the time, but this is how I practiced integrity.
Integrity can be described to who a person is when no one is watching. A person with integrity does the right thing even when they are alone and they know no one else is around. Integrity to me means going above and beyond with everything I do. I think this will fuel good grades and completion of assignments. Having good integrity also came with some confidence, because I had to do more and go outside of the crowd. I did and do more than everyone else, that made me fell a lot more confident about my actions. Confidence has pushed me to make suggestions that I otherwise wouldn't.
Integrity means to adhere to a personal moral code but that is not a guarantee with honesty. For example, if a person breaks something they were not supposed to and that person is not asked about what they did and they keep it silent that does not mean said person is lying. However, a person who personally believes in owning up to their actions and adheres to that belief tells someone that they broke an item by mistake then they are showing integrity. Basically, honesty is giving your word but integrity is keeping it. You can be honest about believing in something but if you adhere to that moral belief then you are showing integrity. American professor Stephen L. Carter wrote in his essay “The Insufficiency of Honesty” that “The first point to understand about the difference between honesty and integrity is that a person may be entirely honest without ever engaging in the hard work of discernment that integrity requires: she may tell us quite truthfully what she believes without ever taking the time to figure out whether what she believes is good and right and true.” (Carter) This shows that a person can tell the truth about what they believe but if do not follow it consistently, it means that they are not showing integrity. American writer Isaac Asimov said in his book How to Enjoy Writing: A Book of Aid and Comfort when he said “Integrity, is, to me, a somewhat stronger word than “honesty.” “Honesty” often implies truth-telling and little more, but “integrity” implies wholeness, soundness, a complex philosophy of life.” (Asimov) This further explains the difference between integrity and honesty. This is why he sees those two virtues as partly different . Carter realized this difference between complete truth and righteousness. Honesty is to tell the complete truth, but integrity is more about righteousness. Sometimes telling the truth could hurt somebody’s feelings which could be a disaster. “The truth hurts”, but having integrity means to not only be a truthful person, but one with moral values, being able to put other’s first and being able to keep promise. Ethics have been apart of life since we born. We are taught at a young age to not still, and that it is bad; to always hold that door open for older people, and to just be whole heartily kind. Also we have to think ethically every decision we have to make and to take everything in apart of what you decide, even keeping you in interest. It is important to consider a situation or contest in which moral problems occur. Also it is important to establish moral principles, rules and guidelines. Integrity is an idea that has been discussed by individuals with a verbal acuity far beyond anything I could ever hope for. With that in mind, I will not delve deeply or poetically into what integrity is or should mean. However, I will simplify the meaning of integrity; at the core, integrity boils down to doing what is right even if nobody is watching. See a piece of trash on the ground and nobody is around...pick it up. Driving down the road with no cops in sight...drive the speed limit. Arrive at a tollbooth and no attendant is working…pay the toll. An applicant is not readily available to sign a form for enlistment…track them down and ensure they sign it. I could write examples until infinity becomes paltry in comparison, yet I am sure I have made my point clearly; the greater good must be upheld regardless of who is there to ensure it is happening. It seems obvious that integrity should be a trait every individual is hardwired with from birth. However, integrity is a thankless trait; nobody is around after all. An individual cannot expect someone to clap, to smile, to thank them, to do anything actually. By definition, integrity should be something that is followed through with simply because an individual wishes to do what is correct, not because they expect accolades of any sort.
