I truly believed that if one plan on achieving his/her aspirations and setting goals is an important step for each individual. It is not only gives him/her a clear focus, but it also helps him/her to organize his/ her plans by allowing ourselves to have time limits and boundaries. There are several reasons why I have set my goals routinely, whether it is only for one day or for the rest of my life. Firstly, I have led my life with great experiences, trials, challenges, and triumphs in which it made me stronger as a person. I was born in India, and I am the only child to my parents. I have finished my secondary school in India, at the age of 16, my family and I decided to move here in America and start a new life. For a starter, we stayed at my aunt’s house for a month, and later on, we moved down to Darien, Georgia. My parents had a job in a motel as a housekeeper, and sometimes, I helped them clean the rooms since school was still not open at that time. We had to walk three miles from home to work in a hot summer season. We worked for three months as a housekeeper, and then, my family and I have decided to move to Americus, GA. Goal setting is a key to achieving success in any endeavor. It is very complex to know where one is going if one does not know where to go. Everyone needs goals to be enthused, grow or increase performance especially with strong goals. Setting goals for example helps employees know where they need to go and how they should go about getting there. It also helps employees manage themselves. Employees should set goals that are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. Goals represent expectations and if employees have higher expectations then employees will have improved performance as long as employees achieve their goals. Most of the time, what employees need is motivation, meaning, and purpose in their jobs and if employees set worthwhile goals, they will find life but work more specifically more fulfilling and exciting. Once there is an aim, there is purpose and fulfilling that purpose increases performance as there is realization of achieving success.

The theory of goal setting was developed by Edward Locke and Gary Latham (1990) and states that there is a direct relationship between the setting of specific high goals and task performance. A higher degree of employee performance is obtained when specific goals are set compared to the performance achieved when employees are simply told to do their best (Latham & Locke, 2007). These findings have helped shape leadership styles and improve employee performance and job satisfaction (Posthuma & Al-Riyami, 2012).
My parents migrated to the U.S. from Pakistan in 1990s. Growing up, we did not have much. My dad supported a family of seven on bare minimum wage. We lived in the dangerous slums of New York in a two bedroom, roach infested apartment. While there, my cousin got shot. I vividly remember the horrifying pain sketched into every wrinkle of his face. It made me want to do something with my life so we could move to a better place. My father had the same thought. My father worked hard, and established himself to become a professional tailor. He taught me the meaning of getting education and hard work. We eventually moved to Brooklyn where the air was fresh, the water was clean, the house free of roaches. As I grew, I worked hard at home helping my mother and siblings. Whenever they would need emotional support, I would offer my help to lift their spirit up. Their recovery was a source of my contentment. It never failed to warm my heart.
This is my story of how I got the chance to come to America. My parents left me and my siblings at a tender age and they came to America. We stayed with some of our family members before moving out to stay on our own. It wasn’t easy, but we passed through it.
