Nowadays, not only is a person’s intelligence (IQ) important but also his or her emotional intelligence is useful. Emotional intelligence says a great deal about a person’s abilities to be competent and successful in life. It is necessary to know and understand the meaning of emotional intelligence. Wise people tend to be aware of this factor. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the relevancy of emotional intelligence as a determinant of a person’s personal and social competence.
I took the Emotional IQ Test found on the Discovery Health website. My results (89/100) were excellent according to the website’s ranking system. Because I earned a score that was higher than average, I felt relieved and very satisfied. These results showed that

Mackin (2006) suggests that emotional intelligence is a “term used to describe the complex ability to regulate our impulses, empathize with others and be resilient in the face of difficulties” (p. 1). Because emotional intelligence can be learned, it allows individuals to grow in terms of their emotions and responses to the world around them (Recker, 2001). For example, instead of coddling shy children, parents should encourage them to participate in challenging situations that build emotional intelligence (Recker, 2001). Similarly, parents should not hinder the activities of children with high emotional intelligence; rather, they should give them the opportunities to explore and have success with their ambitions. First of all, high levels of emotional intelligence are needed in teamwork-related activities. When people are capable of interacting in a good way, they are more likely to be creative and responsive to the ideas of the whole group. Secondly, 90 percent of top performers have a high emotional intelligence (“About Emotional Intelligence,” 2011). Thus, it is a benefit and an advantage for a person to strive for higher emotional intelligence scores. There are ways that a person can improve their emotional intelligence. For instance, it is useful to keep a journal and record emotional states during the course of a month. By doing this, a person can track his or her body and cues (Mackin, 2006). Another good technique is to use “self-talk” because what people tell themselves reveals their emotional states, positive or negative (Mackin, 2006). For moreover, Daniel Goleman (2004) explained that emotional intelligence plays an integral role in defining character and determining both our individual and group densities. It involves the ability in monitoring one’s own and others emotion, to discriminate among them, and to use the information to guide one’s thinking and action. It means to embrace the power of emotion intelligently, it involves abilities that may be categorized, into five (5) domains: (1) self-awareness, (2) emotional maturity, (3) self-motivation, (4) emphatic understanding, and (5) quality communication.
Emotional intelligence has been defined as “the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions,” (Gantt & Slife 17). Psychologists John Mayer, Peter Salovey and David Caruso argue that some people have a greater emotional intelligence and a greater capacity than others to carry out more intelligent information when processing emotions. While on the other hand, psychologists Gerald Matthew, Moshe Zeidner, and Richard Roberts claimed that the concept of emotional intelligence, as it is defined now is flawed and has no reliable foundation in any of the models of human behavior such as biological, cognitive, coping, or personality.
As a student of psychology with a desire to pursue a career in counseling, understanding and developing personal emotional intelligence could play a significate role in the success or failure of my career. Emotional Intelligence (EQ), according to John Mayer (2009) is the ability to be aware of and manage one’s own and others emotions (para. 1). Myers (2013) identifies four components of emotional intelligence (pg. 375). The first is emotional awareness, or the ability to recognize emotions in yourself and others. Second is the ability to understand emotions. In other words, to understand how emotions affect us personally, how they affect others, and the meanings emotions convey. In addition to being aware of and understanding emotions, one also needs to manage emotions, appropriately expressing and regulating personal emotions, and being able to encourage or calm another person. The final component of emotional intelligence is being able to use emotions to think creatively and solve problems. An increasing percent of the population begins to know the idea of emotional intelligence. This concept was firstly developed by two American university professors, John Mayer and Peter Salovey (1990) and they concluded that, people with high emotional quotient are supposed to learn more quickly due to their abilities.
