The importance of diversity, equity and inclusion play a significant role within the Australian Curriculum and have a particular resonance when teaching the Humanities (History, Geography, Economics and Business and Civics and Citizenship) and Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning areas. The Humanities, Health and Physical Education (HHPE) learning areas provide students with a broad understanding of the world we live and educate students about diversity, equity and inclusion. The importance of diversity, equity and inclusion play a significant role within the Australian Curriculum and have a particular resonance when teaching the HHPE learning areas. Teachers need to have an understanding of their student’s profiles and provide an inclusive environment, promoting equality and supporting diversity within the classroom. There are many different cultures, ethnicities, religions, beliefs, socioeconomic backgrounds and personalities in a classroom and these differences should be celebrated. Through teaching HHPE students gain an understanding everyone is different and learn to accept these differences, resulting in a more equitable and inclusive learning environment. Teachers need to ensure fairness, equity and inclusion are a priority in their teaching approach to reflect our diverse student population.
