Defensive driving can save lives. It can turn a nonchalant call home into a terrifying call home. It is making the choice between stopping at a stop sign or stopping someone’s life. Defensive driving should be a part of everyone’s daily driving routine. If you practice defensive driving you can save yourself time, money, and a lot of headaches. It also benefits you in more ways than one.
Defensive driving is the act of driving safely while being alert and aware of your surroundings and other drivers. It is the act of driving for yourself and others as well. You cannot be a defensive driver if you have distractions. Whether it be people, music or even objects, you should keep all of these things at bay.. By doing this you will become a better, more defensive driver. When driving it is important to stay focused by keeping your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel. You should never take your eyes off the road to do anything while the car is in motion, even if it is only for a split second because you could cause a very serious accident. It is also important to check your mirrors before you pull off and use them as you are driving. The only time that you should take your eyes off the road in front of you, is to check the road on the sides of you and in the rear of you by using your mirrors. This is an important factor for defensive driving because it allows you to make safe lane changes and be aware of your surroundings.

Defensive driving is an extremely important part of life and it comes with a wide variety of responsibilities and benefits. However, defensive driving is not as easy as one, two, three. It takes time, persistence, consistency and patience to perfect your defensive driving skills. Practicing these skills everyday is the only way that you will be able to enjoy all of the benefits that defensive driving has to offer.
Aggressive driving can also result from drunk or drug driving and distracted driving. It is hence densely woven into multiple road dangers.
What is considered to be distracted driving in today’s world, is it just using devices or talking. Well in research article from BMC Public Health, “DD is an activity that can take a driver’s eyes off the road and divert his/her attention to something else”. Distracted driving includes but is not limited to using a mobile device, using a GPS, personal hygiene, talking to passengers, reading, even just adjusting the radio/stereo and list goes on and on. So how do adults and teen drivers classify these, well it is broken down in to 3 different parts. Visual, Manual, and Cognitive. Each equal having a negative effect on adult and teen drivers, cause them to become a DD. These three categories of DD, as found in Maclean’s Magazine, that each one has a certain effect on adult and teen drivers causing them to lose focus on the road in which makes them unaware of their surroundings. The Visual side is anything that cause the adult or teen driver to take their eyes off the road in which causing them to place their eyes on something else. The Manual side is in which the adult or teen driver takes his/hers hands off the wheel for something else in which takes control of motor vehicle away from driver.
Driving under the influence is extremely dangerous. Those who drink and drive tend to have an increased risk of car accidents, highway injuries, and vehicular fatalities. However, there are countless ways to prevent drunk driving. Professor David J. Hanson at the sociology department at the State University of New York states that “designated drivers have saved nearly 50,000 lives and spared many more thousands of people from suffering injury from drunk driving. It is a proven fact that almost 30 people in the US die every day in a motor vehicle accident involving a driver impaired by alcohol.” Every accident caused by drunk driving is one hundred percent preventable.
Drinking and driving is a big issue throughout the world causing many accidents. Intoxicated drivers go behind the wheel all the time causing harm to not just themselves but to innocent people on the roads. The question is to stay sober or to find a designated driver. People need to understand how important it is to not drink and drive. There are many things that could occur due to drinking and driving. Individuals can cause accidents and many face legal repercussions. These legal repercussions can even affect your life later on, if not right away.
Teens need to be taught that driving is a task that is complex and demanding. Parents know how much experience a young driver has, and they know exactly how inconvenient it is when they have to drive with their teen everywhere while they have their permit. Teens tend to cause most traffic accidents in adults’ eyes. They are not experienced yet, and often fail to pay attention to others on the road. They often think of a car as being some type of toy, but they do not know how powerful it really is. The driver education programs must be strengthened in order to make sure that students really have safer habits, behind the wheel experience, and by having a better understanding of all the laws on the road.
Remember that driving is a privilege not a right, so drive safely because it saves you money and a lot of lives.
Distracted driving: the practice of driving a motor vehicle while engaged in another activity. Anything besides focusing on the road can be considered distracted driving. Most people would think that the only real distraction while driving is the use of a cell phone, however, that is entirely untrue. There are people that give the term, distracted driving, a whole new meaning. People do everything from fixing their makeup to shaving while driving in their cars. When you are driving you always have to be alert and have your eyes all over the road. Being that no one can foretell the future you never know what is around the corner. At any given time an accident can occur and if one does and your are in close range of it, it is up to you to stop in enough time to avoid the accident and to avoid one of your own. This act of avoiding an accident all depends on your response time. Your response time in the amount of time a person requires before they can act. Your response time has a direct impact on your driving. As you know it takes time to realize the situation and then more time added to that to actually respond to the whole situation. If you are not quick to act, then most likely you will be apart of the crash. That is why getting a better knowledge of your response time is very important because it can save your lives as well as others.
We can attack and reduce the dangers of aggressive driving. Each of us should take a look at our own driving habits and those of our friends and loved ones. The government can help with road improvements and law enforcement, but solving this problem will require people to change their behavior. Working together, we can make our roads safer and prevent deaths and injuries.

The main distraction of driving is cell phones. Most adults and teens will engage in texting and driving. Due to the major issue of texting and driving many campaigns have been launched, one being launched by AT&T “when it comes to texting and driving, it can wait.” This campaign has many drivers take the pledge to no longer use their phone when driving, there is an available app that will send out automatic messages to anybody that sends a while the individual is driving. When someone is driving at the rate of 55 miles per hour for only 4.6 seconds, it will equal the length of a football field, 100 yards. So, even stopping full vision from the road for a few seconds will still risk serious danger. Another cause of distracted driving is being exhausted or tired, doing so will cause a much slower reaction time. The slower reaction time causes many of the accidents that happen when people are tired. Another possibility is falling asleep behind the wheel even for a few seconds you could drift, or swerv into another lane and hit another car causing a major or fatal car accident. When taking driving classes, the students within the class will hear the saying “stay alert, stay alive.” The final major distraction of driving is eating and drinking. The biggest risk of all that is associated with the use of cell phones while driving is death of yourself or someone else. No message is that important that you should risk your life or your education to receive it. Some of these behaviors need to be changed by a personal choice to improve their lives while other changes are being forced upon us to keep the road ways safe for everyone. By making just one of these changes during the day you will feel as though you have a new freedom from being attached to your cell phone.
