“To get the full value of joy must have someone to divide it with.”- Mark Twain. Companionship is a commodity every individual needs in their lives in order to function well. Everyone knows how it feels to be lonely, it’s terrible being isolated, it can harm someone mentally and physically. In Naples Florida, there are 55 plus retirement communities overflowing with lonely elderly people locked up inside. It is not a healthy environment, it has a death row like vibe to it. Adults above the age of 55 are about 40% of the population of Naples according to the 2015 census. According to an article about 7 Americans, 65 and over suffer from depression due to isolation. Grey Matters is an outreach program built to lend a helping hand to those who are deserted, while also providing the volunteer caregivers with knowledge and volunteer hours. Nobody should be left out in the dark, we need to end this plague with the elderly by providing companionship in retirement homes and in households with single elderly people living alone. Creating Grey Matters will terminate the loneliness among the elderly and provide an opportunity for those who help the elderly as well.

Providing companionship is the top priority here 20% of the elderly population here in America suffers from depression. Now add in those who have lost loved ones, or whose relatives live out of state. Those poor souls are the ones stranded in retirement homes with no possible way to leave the building. The best possible way of any of them communicating with anyone outside of the retirement home are caring volunteers. All life is precious nobody should be left alone without a friend. Elderly is society’s most experienced group people with the inside knowledge of every life problem that will happen in our lives that they can pass on to the future leaders, also this program can help widowers fill the void of losing their loved ones. Grey Matters is going to produce a more tight knit bond between the elderly and the younger generation than ever before. The elderly have been left out in the cold for too long the time to act is now particularly when those age 65 and older have the highest rate of suicide” (Sackeim, Harold and Roose, Steven 157.)Nobody should be forgotten about because Grey does matter.
