Throughout the semester, in this course as well as through the experiences I have had in the clinic, it has become exceedingly more clear that communication skills are equally if not more important for a healthcare provider than the education they have received. It is inherent in our human nature to trust those who treat us with kindness and understanding. It is because of this fact that communication skills are as vital to effective care as clinical skills in the practice of medicine. Balancing these two key components of healthcare is becoming more challenging each day in our community as healthcare is advancing and the demographics of patients in drastically diversifying. This strain on the field shows great opportunity for growth as a field but also opens the door for patients to slip through the cracks due to language, cultural or educational barriers. Medical providers, Optometrists in particular are being forced to adapt their practice models in order to accommodate this change. Best practice models are changing and communication is the basis allowing for this change.
Optometry is unique when compared to a field such as general medicine; as a field, optometry is relatively new to many people. The importance of optometry has moved beyond simply helping patients see better, to maintaining the health of the eye and working to screen for many other health conditions. Because its importance is becoming more understood and well known to the general public, the number of patients seeking treatment is growing drastically. Personal Reflection
As a future optometrist best practice is what I hope to achieve with every patient and I believe that the entire purpose to learning to communicate with patients is so we can reach that goal. Though I do agree with what Grol and Grimshaw said about the importance of continuing education and finding effective and efficient ways of integrating new techniques into our practices, I still believe that the most important aspect of best practice is communication with the patient. Like I stated above I would like to go back to Minnesota to practice and this assignment has made it clear to me that it is very important to leave school with the necessary clinical skills and knowledge but without learning how to communicate with different populations of people I will not be nearly as successful as I wish to be as an optometrist.
Optometry involves of a combination of intricate practical skills and academia allowing the improvement of an individual’s vision as an outcome changing their quality of life. I would feel privileged to gain the opportunity to study Optometry enabling me to improve the ocular health and vision of others as it would be a valuable contribution to the society.

In healthcare one of the major obstacles employees attempt to overcome is the communication gap. The outpatient clinics in particular find it challenging to keep in contact with the hospital. In the healthcare market to have success you must have communication. Romano observed that hospitals are branching out; outpatient setting offer lucrative services that are rendered in a well-situated environment (2006). The outpatient sector is where the profit is made; this is clearly the way of the future. If prospective clinics are to fulfill patient and employees needs, a communication policy must be put into practice. By employing a communication strategy employees will be more productive, more informed, and administration could expect to see enhanced customer service.
My journey towards the field of optometry began in an unsuspecting place; a tiny pharmacy situated inside of a local medical facility. Throughout high school, I spent my time outside of class behind a counter, shadowing and working for a pharmacist who instructed me on the many facets of the profession. I always knew I wanted a career in the field of health, and the more I experienced the more I was certain that becoming a pharmacist was the perfect profession for me.

Observing other offices will help you understand how a successful OD office should be run (2). Letting the patient and staff know what is about to happen or where you are going will let the office run smoothly and efficiently (3). The last tip that he offers is making sure to put some of the revenue towards customer recovery (4). Being able to change a bad situation into a good one can alter a patient's experience in the office. Weather it be a mistake done by a staff member or a manufacturing defect, you are able to change their negative experience into a positive one with customer recovery. My interest in the career of optometry stems from my first experience in the optometry office to receive my first pair of glasses when I was in middle school. I distinctly remember the moment when my optometrist slipped my new glasses over my eyes for the first time. Suddenly, everything in the room came into sharp, clear focus. I knew that the glasses would help me see the board in school, but I was astonished to find that I could see small details about the room, as it had never before occurred to me that I should have been able to see these details.
