Being health conscious is arguably the most important thing a person can do for themselves during her lifetime. I was quite overweight as a child, so when I became old enough to realize the importance of a quality diet and exercise ritual, I strongly began to enforce them. Today I continue to monitor the amount of fatty, oily foods I consume, as well as maintain some level of physical activity. Until instructed in the course, Dynamics of Personal Health, I had never charted out my food consumption or physical activity. It was very interesting and beneficial to see a breakdown of my daily calorie intake and usage. As stated in “Understanding Your Health”, “Food Supports growth and development by providing the body with nutrients needed for energy, repair of damaged tissue, growth of new tissue, and regulation of physiological processes.” (Payne, Hahn & Lucas 113). It may sound obvious to say food is responsible for life, but when a person lives a life where food is always accessible, it is far too easy to forget the importance of food. The best advice I saw on the website was, “start small”. It has been a goal of mine for some time to have visible abdominal muscles. I know having abs is not a true testimony of physical health, but I feel as though obtaining the body image I want is one of the best motivators for eating right and exercising. If I truly want to achieve this goal, I have to start small and research the best exercises and foods to eat in order to see the results I want. Once I have the knowledge I need, I can slowly incorporate the necessary dietary and exercise changes into my life. Understanding that there are resources, like the super tracker, that are easily accessible, will allow me to get where I want to be physically and anyone else who takes advantage of
