Summary
I completed my first work term in the role of “operations intern” at Barry Callebaut, Chatham. During my time there, I worked on projects for production, process and quality departments. While completing these projects, I gained insight on the significance and interactions of the departments in a manufacturing environment.
My work term has proven to be extremely beneficial. I was able to satisfy my goals, develop and enhance skills, gain valuable engineering experience, and become comfortable in a professional setting outside of university.

As mentioned earlier, I took part in updating several quality and operation manuals, where I focused on ensuring the procedures are written in a comprehensive manner.
My third objective was to focus on the importance of the timeline of the tasks to the fast-paced environment of my workplace. Being exposed to this environment, I was able to practice prioritizing, organizing and managing my tasks and time.
Regardless of the industry, data analysis is a competency that can be used to take a well throughout proactive approach to saving time and money. Therefore, through this co-op semester I wanted to take part in gathering data and analysing them as a means of optimizing production and minimizing cost and time, with keeping in mind other essential factors such as quality and process. Taking part in the OJT program and trend analysis provided me with this opportunity.

Moreover, I used the opportunity to experience and understand the limitations of ideal engineering and practical human systems in achieving desired goals, including limitations of production methods, manufacturing tolerances and performance minima; and understanding the significance of time and money in the engineering process and manufacturing of food industry. Written communication skills are also essential engineering experiences acquired through this project. Prior to the observations, I also studied the standard operating procedures existing for that position, and comparing my observations with the document and using written communications skills to improve the structure and technique in which those documents were written in order to better convey information. The first philosophy “One Minute Goal Setting” makes tasks assigned to the individual clear and precise. The manager first expresses goals that need to be accomplished. Once an agreement is made, each goal is written down in 250 words or less. It is strongly held that it should take no more than a minute to read. You should reinforce each goal throughout the day. Also take time to look at your performance and see if your behavior matches your goals.
I discovered new areas and specialties that I didn’t know I could enjoy and possibly make an important contribution like the legislative and research fields.

In turn, I benefited from further improving my ability to work as part of a team of professionals and I gained immense confidence practicing medicine in an evidence-based environment.
I have also improved my creative and critical thinking skills. For example, the use of infographics in the conclusion of our presentation helped to filter down all the macro details mentioned in presentation into an easy to read format.

I have learned that I am not the amazing communicator I once thought I was. I have many skills to practice and develop to become an effective communicator. Discovering my working style has allowed me to look more closely at my roles in various groups at work and understand why these groups don’t always work. Of those who responded, eighty-two percent were employed full-time after graduation earning a median salary of $62,500 (Santa Clara University). This research exhibits that internships can be an important strategy in the efforts toward job search for both students, as well as for employers looking to hire valuable employees. As defined by InternNE.com, an internship is any carefully monitored service or work experience that may be evaluated for educational credit in which an intern or student establishes learning goals and reflects on his or her learning experience in relation to achievement of the stated goals. Internships should first be examined that, when implemented at fullest potential, these opportunities can provide companies and students with a competitive edge in today’s business world. Subsequently, it can be shown that internships assist organizations and companies with temporary or seasonal project and task completion. Lastly, internships will be clarified as to how they allow students to gain valuable experience before entering the workforce. From reviewing an ample amount of research, internships are beneficial and advantageous to the success of a young student, as well as companies.
I now apply technology to many different aspects of my life including academics, personal, and recreational. I am now able to choose wisely between different types of technology and am able to distinguish between the different options that I have. I also have a much better understanding of the wide variety of programs that are accessible to me and I am able to use them with a basic understanding of how they work.
The quarter has finally come to an end, and with that, I close out my internship and this class that went along with it. It was a great experience and I leave equipped with a new set of skills that are preparing me for the world ahead. As I write this reflection paper, I think back to the very first week when I set up two goals for myself to focus on and hope to achieve throughout the following weeks. My first goal was to develop a better understanding of myself within the work place, and my second was to develop a strong network to jumpstart my career. Both of my goals were achieved, however, I don’t feel that either of my goals will ever be complete. I believe that you can always formulate a better understanding of yourself, and you can always network to develop a stronger tree of connections. The report I am going to write about is to do with electrical safety devices and safety practices which contribute in reducing and eliminate specific risks. The workplace I have chosen to write about is electricians in power stations. The report I am going to write is going to show a clear understanding of electrical safety devices and the improvements of electrical safety devices.
Throughout my internship, I was well trained and did receive a fruitful experience. The real working environment prepared me for future employment after my graduation. However, I did encounter some problems, which I gradually managed to deal with. Whatever happens, productivity increases by keeping a positive attitude.
