The Benefits of Having a Pet Dog Dogs have been a very popular domestic pet amongst people in different countries for many years. The most common reason for people to own a dog is to have a companion to play with, bond with, and to spend time with. One must understand that dogs do not always bite without a reason. Oftentimes, children do not know the boundaries between themselves and the dog. As a result the child might touch the dog too roughly to where it thinks it is being threatened or provoked. In Wilson’s study of “Prevention of Dog Bites” it says that many of these dog bite incidences resulted from improper dog handling by children (76). Thus, one must understand that the dog only responded out of fear or because it felt threatened (76). Not all dogs react with aggression, nonetheless there is a possibility that they will. Consequently, parents must do a good job explaining to their children how to properly play with and touch the dog. On the other hand, not only do children need to know how to behave properly around the dog, but dogs need to be properly trained as well. There are options such as obedience classes for dogs, getting a professional dog trainer involved or simply educating oneself prior to adopting a dog, and knowing how to properly handle and train them. The last option is the least costly option, which is typically
Dogs should be trained to be around people and other pets at an early age. Training a dog to listen and obey is the most important factor (Marketwire). A dog can simply be bored and want to play aggressively. No matter the breed a dog can always be trained not to be violent (“CAUSES OF DOG”). An improperly trained dog can turn out to be mean and aggressive. Also allowing your dog to practice these behaviors will cause them to adapt to them. Exposing a dog to new things will help it become comfortable with them and recognize them. Dogs use their bark as an alarming system (Marketwire). Knowing when and why a dog is aggressive is a key factor for changing this
Also, educating parents and grandparents etc, on animal/ children safety could greatly reduce the number of attacks on children. You should never leave a young child unattended with a dog, or any animal for that matter, its just not safe. Children that have been attacked by family dogs that have been around said child its whole life, tend to be the results of the child being left alone with the dog and not properly supervised, not nasty or mean dogs. Any dog could snap and turn on somebody, esp a child who say, doesn’t realize the dog is in pain and jumps on them etc. As long as dogs and childrens interactions are supervised many dangerous situations can be avoided.
Several studies have examined the effects of dog ownership on people's physical and mental health. Dog ownership produces considerable health benefit and provides social support that encourages dog owners to walk (Cutt et al.2007 ). Pet owners appear to have lower systolic blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels(Anderson et al 1992). Pet owners with serious mental illness living in the community demonstrate higher social community integration(Zimalog and Krupa 2009). Socially excluded participants who performed in the presence of a dog report higher mental well-being compared with socially excluded participants who did not work in the presence of a dog (Nilüfer et al 2012). Although there is evidence suggesting that dog ownership can improve people's physical and mental health, there is little research documenting the psychological and behavioral effects of dog-assisted therapy, especially on elderly patients with dementia, who have dif...
There have been very few dog bite risk factor studies conducted. There is veterinary clinic-based retrospective study aimed at identifying human–canine environmental risk factors for non-play bites. Allowing a dog to run free out of the yard, sleeping in the owners bed, and routinely allowing the dog around strangers were all found to habits that promote biting. The study also found that dogs acquired for companionship were more likely to bite than those acquired for protection. Overall, dogs which are not confined in their interactions with humans are at elevated risk for biting.

Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), which can be provided in a group or individual settings, is designed to promote improvement in a human’s physical, social, emotional, or cognitive function. An article by Chitic, Rusu, and Szamoskozi (2012) provides an analysis in order to determine the value of AAT. Both dogs and horses that were trained for AAT were examined and studied to determine their effectiveness in treating patients with psychological disorders. The results showed that both therapy dogs and horses were valuable aids to the therapeutic process. The analysis suggests that proper training and repeated sessions were necessary for proper treatment of patients. In addition, certain disorders may benefit more than others in regards to AAT. For example, a child with ADHD may not benefit from a therapy dog’s presence, for it may worsen the hyperactive symptoms. On the other hand, a patient with depression may benefit greatly from the same animal (Chitic, Rusu, Szamoskozi, 2012). These findings are a perfect starting point to answering the research question: Do patients who engage in AAT display a betterment in their overall emotional well-being, as well as show improvement in their interpersonal interactions...
