A leader is a individual who has integrity, a vision, is honest, trustworthy, has a drive, commitment to achieve that vision, and the skills to make it happen. As a leader, first and foremost it is so critical to lead by example. Any leader or manager should not expect his/her members to do things he or she hasn’t or wouldn 't do. It is important to instill trust in the members. In doing so, members will realize that leader has their best interest at heart, and they will be more likely to follow their guidance as relationship has been built on trust.
Managers need to be aware of the historical developments in management as well, so they can learn from the past and positively influence the future. It is also important to learn the way theorists and managers view members of organizations and the nature of an effective organization. Well-prepared managers need to develop a sound understanding of terms, ideas, and names that serve as part of the vocabulary of management. For example, managerial concepts regularly refer to Theory X, Theory Y & Theory Z in addition terms such as span of control and others are critical.
In addition, this historical overview illustrates a central theme in the study and practice of management: the important role of theory and expert opinion. There are different bodies of theory about how to organize and manage have strongly influenced, and been influenced by, the way managers and organizations behave. Some of the general trends involve profoundly important beliefs about the nature of human motivation and of successful organizations.

Another example of one of the earliest of the theorists was Frederick Winslow Taylor. He started the Scientific Management movement, and he and his associates were the first people to study the work process scientifically. They studied how work was performed, and they looked at how this affected worker productivity. Taylor 's philosophy focused on the belief that making people work as hard as they could was not as efficient as optimizing the way the work was done. Taylor believed that all workers were motivated by money, so he promoted the idea of "a fair day 's pay for a fair day 's work." In other words, if a worker didn 't achieve enough in a day, he didn 't deserve to be paid as much as another worker who was highly productive.
