In the past, nursing care has focused on individuals or communities of people, but in more recent years, the profession has begun to see the care of families as a nursing specialty (Hanson, 2012). The characteristics of a family impacts how they deal with and overcome stressors. Communication, respect, trust, and support contribute to the health of families by providing tools to solve conflicts and problems (Rowe Kaakinen, Padgett Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, & Harmon Hanson, 2015). For this post I will consider a family that I have encountered, discuss the healthy family traits that they exhibit and identify the roles that I used as a family nurse caring for this family.

The wife is our patient and was a hospital administrator when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She had surgery to remove the tumor and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. The surgery has affected her memory so she must depend on her husband to remember the details of her care and to help with decision-making. She also has back pain and needs an epidural steroid injection. Unfortunately, if we perform the spinal injection while she is taking chemotherapy her injection wound would not heal. My role in helping her schedule the injection was to collaborate with her husband and the oncology office to arrange a schedule for her to hold both the chemotherapy and the anti-coagulant prior to her …show more content…

The husband is empathetic and respectful of his wife’s condition and listens and communicates with her regularly. He worked with me to support his wife when developing a plan of care with the oncology physician, nurses, and pharmacist. The times I spoke to her, she conveyed to me her sense of trust in his coordination of her care, since her memory is impaired. Even though she is still dealing with some serious health problems, they both exhibited a sense of humor when planning details of her care. The husband has taken on additional roles in the family and she has had to give up some control due to her memory loss. Their attitudes, support and level of caring for each other help them successfully deal with her complex health issues.
When providing health care to families, the nurse encompasses many roles. Some examples of these roles include technical expert, consultant, counselor, case finder, surrogate, environmental modifier, liaison, role model, and researcher. When working with this family to prepare them for the steroid injection, I assumed the roles of case manager, health educator, and clarifier/interpreter. I educated them on the details of the injection process, coordinated her care between the spine center and the oncology office, and clarified the details of the plan with her and her husband a week before the
