Assessment and Curriculum - pages 30-58 In order to create an effective educational program, four major components must be addressed; assessment, curriculum, methodology, and evaluations. The starting point should always be to assess the student, this gives the teacher information about the student’s capability and what he or she already knows. It 's also important to take into account any factors that can affect the student’s ability to perform. Assessment is also essential to help a teacher understand if the student was able to learn a specific skill. Assessment allows the teacher to gather data on the student and check for progress, it also helps create a history of the student 's progress. Medial assessment is imperative when working with children with severe disabilities. They help the teacher make modifications to method of instruction and strategies in order to meet the specific needs of the student. Additionally, medical assessment can provide useful information such as genetic disorders, complications during birth or pregnancy, Assessment of physical growth can be beneficial as a log is kept with the growth chart of the student, …show more content…

All the questions can be answered with a “can do” or “needs training”, based on these answers the teacher can develop a program that will work on the skills that the child needs additional training on. The Portage Project Checklist addresses cognition, self-help, motor, language, and socialization skills. Progress is kept by the teacher whenever skill is masters, they usually address up to three skills at the same time. Teachers may also look into additional long-term assessments that meets the curriculum, such as the Balthazar Scales of Adaptive Behavior, The YEMR and TMR Performance Profiles, Cain-Levine Social Competence Scale,
