Assessment and Curriculum - pages 30-58 In order to create an effective educational program, four major components must be addressed; assessment, curriculum, methodology, and evaluations. The starting point should always be to assess the student, this gives the teacher information about the student’s capability and what he or she already knows. They help the teacher make modifications to method of instruction and strategies in order to meet the specific needs of the student. I read the Syllabus very carefully, as requested, and I do not have any questions. The topic I choose to do a web field trip on to search and return with one fact is “Specific Populations to assess: developmentally challenged”. I am using information from APA.org, which is where I found the one fact that was requested for this assignment. What I found was a set of guidelines for the treatment and assessment of people with disabilities that were developed by a task force of APA specialists. I am using the section “Testing and Assessment” which includes Guidelines 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 (APA Task Force, 2017) I found the fact that I am going to share under Guideline 15 which is “Psychologists strive to determine whether accommodations are appropriate for clients to yield a valid test score” (APA Task Force, 2017, Guideline 15).

If we were going to have national standards, there should have been some effort to design a baseline curriculum to be used in the first design of textbooks and testing materials. But I would guess a mix of things, but mostly political pressure and the threat that standardized testing would use common core as its guide and those tests could affect educational funding.

In society today, there are many children and parents who face the diagnosis of having a developmental disability that would qualify them for special education and needs. This time can come with many questions for the parents when they realize the specialized care and education their child will need. Most often, questions arise about their schooling and how they will be included with other children, as well as what services are available to their child. How their disability impacts their life is a very valid concern because their education will be impacted. When a disability is discovered, it effects trickle down from the child to the parents, to the teachers and finally the medical and educational specialists.

Assessments can be used to identify several important aspects of learning and development. First, they can be used to distinguish a child’s strengths and weaknesses as well as measure specific knowledge and skills. Assessments can also be used to demonstrate what a child has learned and what they understand (“Assessment,” 2014). My opinion of assessment has not changed; however, now I understand how to use assessments that will help ensure that I am providing the most benefits for my students.
