With a charter established in 1945, the United Nations began its mission to promote peace and security . International collaboration led to the ratification of the charter by five country representatives at the time: China, France, The Soviet-Union, The United Kingdom and The United States; the UN officially came into existence October 24 1945. Each year since the day of ratification, UN day’s celebration reminds the world of their objective to promote respect for human rights, gender equality; the advancement of women, protecting the environment, fighting disease and reducing poverty. The six main organs within the United Nations: The General Assembly, Security Council, Economics and Social Council, The Trusteeship Council, The Secretariat and the International Court of Justice . Each organ functions to uphold the standards set up by each individually as well as following the statutes within the UN charter.
The General Assembly provides a discussion space for the 193 representative members to go over international issues. The assembly meets regularly between September and December each year. The General Assembly represents all members of the UN. Every meeting that the Assembly holds respects the equality of each nation. During these meetings, different countries bring up different issues to decide on. A countries economic or social status does not determine their influence, because each nation, rich, poor, large or small has only one vote.
Whenever peace is threatened, the Security Council meets. It is required that all member states comply with council decisions. Out of the fifteen regular members, five are permanent: China, France, Russian Federation, The United Kingdom, and the United States; the General Assembly elects o...

every nation in the world belongs to the United Nations. The United Nations has four purposes: to maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations; to cooperate in solving international problems and in promoting respect for human rights; and to be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations. The United Nations is not a world government though, and it does not make laws.
The United Nations was formed shortly before the end of World War II when the League of Nations was deemed useless when it failed to prevent the outbreak of the war. Canada was so obliged to helping UN because they were a part of it when it was formed. Canada alongside the "Big Five" and others, became one of the original members of the peacekeeping and peacemaking UN. It was stated that "Canada has always been a strong supporter of the United Nations and of peacekeeping, and has participated in almost every mission since its inc...

The UN and the many other organizations that began after the Holocaust is a great example of the positives affects that came out of the Holocaust. The United Nations is an international body of 193 countries working to maintain global peace and security, address humanitarian concerns, promote cultural heritage, and administer systems of international law, transportation, commerce and justice. The United Nations began in 1945 as a loosely co-ordinated international system of discussion-based bodies, functional agencies and temporary and permanent commissions with headquarters in New York, Geneva and elsewhere. It replaced the League of Nations, but has a bigger, nearly universal, membership. The term United Nation was first used on the 1st of January in1942 when 26 nations pledged to continue fighting the Axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan. As the Second World War drew to a close, a UN charter was drawn up by 50 countries, including Canada, in San Francisco. After the Holocaust ended the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, administered hundreds of refugee centers and displaced persons camps such as the Bergen-Belsen in Germany. As there were few possibilities for emigration, tens of thousands of homeless Holocaust survivors migrated westward to other European territories liberated by the western Allies. There they were housed in the hundreds
The League of Nations was an Intergovernmental Organisation which persisted from 1919 up until 1946 where it was formally replaced with the United Nations towards the end of the Second World War. Many consider the League as one of the International Systems greatest failures due to it being widely regarded as an ‘ineffective instrument to tackle aggressors’ (Catterall, 1999, p. 52) and its inherent failure to prevent international conflict. However,
The United Nations was formed on October 24, 1945, after the Holocaust, to prevent genocide from ever happening again. A cartoon depicted by Michael Sutherland illustrates the unsuccessful intent of the United Nations. The United Nations is pictured standing over the graves of countries and groups that have suffered from genocide. However, many genocides have taken place since the formation of the United Nations (i.e. the Bosnian genocide). Both genocides began as simple misconceptions or dislikes between peoples but ended in tragic and unnecessary murder.
The UN is made up of six organs. They are the council, Secretariat, and International Court of Justice. NATO is made up of the Defense Planning Committee, Nuclear Atlantic Cooperation Council. UN and NATO were both formed after major crises in the world. UN was being formed during and after WWII.
Fifty-eight years after the signing of the Charter, the world has changed dramatically. Its universal character and comprehensiveness make the United Nations a unique and indispensable forum for governments to work together to address global issues. At the same time, there remains a large gap between aspiration and real accomplishment. There have been many successes and many failures. The United Nations is a bureaucracy that struggles – understandably – in its attempt to bring together 191 countries. It must come at no surprise, therefore, that a consensus cannot always be reached with so many different competing voices.
4. The Security Council is the council in charge of the peacekeeping side of the United Nations. The Security Council contained 15 countries in 1995. The countries were Argentina, Botswana, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Honduras, Indonesia, Italy, Nigeria, Oman, Russian Federation, Rwanda, UK and the U.S. China, France, UK, U.S and Russia are all permanent heads of the council. There are over 50 countries now listed in the Security Council.
The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank were created as a result of the Bretton Woods Conference. Both provide assistance to countries suffering economically. While the IMF is a cooperative institution that aims to create an organized global system of payments and receipts, the World Bank is an institution that aims to help developing countries (Driscoll 1). Both play a part in the economies of struggling nations with the goal of reducing their burden and helping them to survive in the global economic system. Unfortunately, in many cases their practices within developing nations have been seen to create more harm than good. This is possibly because both institutions use a one size fits all approach when aiding countries rather than gaining a deep understanding of each country they are involved in and catering their approach as a result. In this paper I will examine the practices of the IMF and World Bank in developing nations that have led to failure and the effects the policies had on these countries.
The United Nations Organisation was founded on 24 October 1945 with 51 member states and this number has since grown to 192 Member States. The UN was founded to bring all nations of the world together to strive for peace and development based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well being of all people. It is made up of 6 principle organs: Trusteeship Council, Security Council, General Assembly, International Court of Justice, Economic and Social Council and Secretariat.
According to Pease (2012), an international organization are conceived as formal institutions whose members are states and these are divided into two sub-groups called intergovernmental organizations (IGO) and non-governmental organizations (NGO). An IGO consists of states that voluntarily join, contribute financially, and assist in the decision making process. All of their members’ resolves, structures, and administrative protocols are clearly outlined in the treaty or charter. An example of an IGO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). First, all IGOs comes from an established government which can be further categorized by rules of membership which qualifies NATO because it is an alliance of about 30 members from North America and Europe. Secondly, IGOs can have limited participation in membership or restricted membership which qualifies NATO because this is a security agreement and it limits its involvement by confining it to an amalgamation of specific governmental, geographical, and martial considerations. Thirdly, IGOs are categorized by their purpose meaning the member can be multi or general purpose organization and they can take on any global issue (Pease, 2012). This qualifies NATO because over the years the organization has participated in several international war related issues such as the Korean War and the Cold War. Most recently, NATO, for the first time in history had to engage Article 5 of the treaty after the 9/11 attacks in New York City and the no-fly zone in the country of Libya.
The United Nations has made many achievements since the agreement made in 1945. The efforts of the UN helped end the apartheid in South Africa allowing the citizens of South Africa equal participation in the Elections of April 1994 followed by a consensus in choosing a form of government. 90 percent of children in developing countries attend school and 60 percent of adults in these countries can read and write thanks to the UN and the struggle to improve education in developing countries. Over 300 international treaties have been created through United Nations efforts to strengthen international law. These achievements and many others encourage people like myself to promote and praise the United Nations.
