Munson Healthcare includes nine owned or affiliated hospitals with more than 7,000 employees. It provides services to patients from 30 counties in Michigan spread through the northern half of the Lower Peninsula as well as the eastern half of the Upper Peninsula. As part of the organization’s True North initiative, the patient is central to all processes. In this large and varied organization, implementation of a large quality management system will help ensure that we meet this goal.
The International Organization for Standardization developed a series of written quality standards (Evans, 2014). The purpose was to standardize quality requirements between European countries in the common market and countries wanting to do business with them (Evans, 2014). This paper will review the ISO 9000 standards, the benefits of implementing an ISO-compliant quality management system (QMS), and describe challenges to the successful implementation of such a program in a hospital system.

The ISO 9000 series developed by the International Organization for Standardization includes requirements of a QMS (9001) and guidelines to make a QMS more effective and efficient (9004) (van den Heuvel, Koning, Bogers, Berg & van Dijen, 2005). In 2008, the International Organization for Standardization clarified the language in the 9001 standards but it remained comparable to the 2000 version (Hunt, 2008). If the system is going to continue providing high quality care and successfully differentiate itself from competitors, Munson Healthcare should implement a QMS based upon the 9001:2015 standards. This will ensure the organization continues to meet the most recent standards.
The successful implementation of these standards will help ensure reliable delivery of high quality services to our patients. It will also help differentiate the hospital from its competitors and may enhance patient safety. However, it will be challenging to implement these standards throughout the entire system. Therefore, it is essential to train and engage the employees and management staff. Cooperation and striving towards a common goal will help but it will be essential that the senior leadership team champion this effort.
