Imperialism is the domination of one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country. Imperialism is more often than not fueled by two major schools of thought known as nationalism and Social Darwinism. Nationalism is a feeling of pride and devotion to one’s country. This can drive a person to think that their country is the most powerful, and in essence drives that person mad with power and a hunger to conquer, which not ironically is exactly what many countries did. Social Darwinism is the very idea that a more powerful country conquer the smaller countries. “Survival of the fittest,” as the well renowned Charles Darwin used to say. Imperialism is also sometimes sparked by military motives, such as when USA set up a naval/marine base in the Philippines, and Economic Motives, which will be the main focus of the Imperialism of India by Britain.
India’s conquer by Britain is a perfect example of the pros and cons to an imperialistic world. As imperialism advanced, the positive and negative sides of imperialism began to aid in colonizers seeing two sides to i...
What is pictured when someone thinks of India? Perhaps the manufactured goods, or diverse people. The truth is, however, that until India gained its independence in 1947, it was ruled entirely by British government. The British then proceeded to “improve” India, driving it into a deeper hole. Although British Imperialism in India had some positive effects, the overall political, economic, and social impacts were negative.
Imperialism is when a mother nation takes over another nation and become its colony for political, social, and economical reasons. Imperialism is a progressive force for both the oppressors (mother country) and the oppressed (colony), majorly occurring during the late 19th and early 20th century. It had more negative effects than positive effects due to its domination to other nations.
...yway. How can what Britain did be considered good for India? It can’t. At least, not if India’s value is in it’s people. The British did however bring peace to a nation collapsing on itself. And provided India with ‘proper’ education and standards. Communication, transport, industrialization, sanitation all improved and slavery, internal relations conflicts and unacceptable practices all ceased. So Britain’s rule could also be considered the best thing to happen to India. If India’s value were instead measured by western standards considering India before British rule in comparison to after. Everything has it’s price, all that can be truly verified is that British imperialism's impact on India was both positive and negative. It just depends from which side you choose to view it, the colonizers or the colony.
Throughout history, many powerful nations interfered with nations that were weaker than they were. This form of sabotaging a nation is economic, political or cultural life is called as imperialism. Imperialism is often separated into two sects. The first one is old imperialism, which was the period from the 1500s to the 1800s, where European nation started to colonize many areas such as the Americas, and parts of Southeast Asia. On the other hand, the new imperialism was the period between the years “1870-1914”, where Europe became more focused on expanding their land into Asia and Africa. Imperialism had many pros and cons. In addition, it also had many causes led by the feeling of nationalism.
Imperialism is the practice by which powerful nations or peoples seek to extend and maintain control or influence over weaker nations or peoples. By the 1800’s, the Western powers had advantages in this process. They led the world in technological advances, giving them a dominance when conquering other countries. The European Imperialists made attempts to conquer China and Japan. In this process, they succeeded by influencing Japan greatly. However, they were not as successful with China.
Imperialism also had an everlasting positive effect on India through its modernization. For instance, British colonizers develope...
Do you ever wonder why whenever you have a problem, it’s always an Indian person that answers on the phone. Imperialism is when one country (usually the one with more power) takes over another country for their own benefits. Imperialism generally happens when a country needs something that they don’t have and that thing will make their country run smoother. What they do is find who has what they need and if they aren’t best buddies with them, they usually take that country over for what they need. This happened in 1857 when the British took control over India for their cotton and tea because we all know how the British love their tea. Although Britain had developed a strong government for India, gave them plenty of jobs, and built schools for them; However, British government only served the needs of the Britians, the jobs were so crappy that Indians died of starvation, and only the super rich Indian males were the only ones getting educated.
Imperialism means a policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force. During the turn of the 20th century, the United States used this policy when conquering and controlling countries that they helped win their independence, but then the US would turn and say they weren't ready, so they took them in. They called this the White Man’s Burden where the United States thought it was their duty to take the countries in and protect them and force them to change their culture and way of life. There are many negatives and positives to this policy. Overall though, the United States was right for getting involved or taking over, and helping the other countries get on their feet after we helped these countries
The definition of imperialism is, “The conquering of foreign territories by powerful countries for natural resources and markets”. There are also different forms of imperialism, and they are called colonies, protectorates, and spheres of influence. Imperialism had its negative effects, but the positive definitely outweighed the bad.
Imperialism is the complete dominance over one country, by another. Imperialism was mainly caused because of people’s want to be the best economically and nationalistically. The imperialist powers wanted to have the best resources, most amount of money, best businesses, army, and overall the best country.
"All the leadership had spent their early years in England. They were influenced by British thought, British ideas, that is why our leaders were always telling the British "How can you do these things? They're against your own basic values.". We had no hatred, in fact it was the other way round - it was their values that made us revolt." -Aruna Asaf Ali, a leader of the Indian National Congress. (Masani, quoted in Wood, 32, 1989)
Imperialism is a policy based on the ideas of conquering less industrialized countries in order to gain more power, wealth and to increase a nation’s cultural influence. Imperialism took a tight hold on the modernized world after the industrial revolution, as more developed countries through military force started to conquer surrounding countries, and quickly became a global policy. Imperialism left a lasting affecting on the whole world and the result of the idea was not always for the best. An example of such a case was seen in South Africa where due to British rule, apartheid and segregation grew rampant.
Imperialism is the domination of a weaker country by a stronger country. For instance Britain dominated India and China in the mid 1880s to the beginning of the 20th century. Imperialism has had both a positive and negative effects on the countries involved. Britain was imperialistic for many reasons, it could dominate because it had the technology and power to do so. They also needed land to acquire raw materials for growing markets.
Imperialism is the policy or action by which one country controls another country or territory. Most such control is achieved by military means to gain economic and political advantages. Such a policy is also called expansionism. An expansionist state that obtains overseas territories follows a policy usually called colonialism. An imperialist government may wish to gain new markets for its exports, plus sources of inexpensive labor and raw materials. A far-flung empire may satisfy a nation's desire for military advantage or recognition as a world power.
British imperialism on India had many positive and negative affects on both the mother country, Britain and the colony, India. Many people would argue which effects were more prominent in these countries and some would agree that they were equal. But in both cases there were actually both.
