The impact of Terrorism

Terrorism has and is changing the world. The U.S. government describes terrorism as “premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents” (Gupta12). The implications of terrorism go beyond the casualties. Terrorism has evolved drastically; the ramifications of these unjustifiable acts of terror have and are having a great impact in our everyday lives. A single act of terror can strike fear and gloom into an entire country.

Dipak K. Gupta, in his book Who Are the Terrorists? (2006), illustrates what terrorism is and its origin, as well as arguing what is an act of terror. Dipak sates that the term terrorism has always had a negative connotation and the word terrorism originated from the French Revolution during the “Reign of Terror”. During this time period guiltiness were used to kill vast amounts of people who for the most part did no wrong. These ghastly acts were purposely used to install terror and fear into people which is where the term terrorism originated. Gupta’s purpose is to inform the reader on what terrorism is and what qualifies as an act of terror (5).

The old fashioned form of terrorism arrows, daggers, and gunpowder are long gone. Terrorism has advanced to new heights with weapons that can kill in the masses. This is a scary thought and should not be taken lightly. We have developed many ways to kill one another and have become ironically good at it.

The subject of terrorism is not the most pleasant although it is talked about greatly. In peoples conversations, the media, and the government terrorism is talked about wherever with whomever.

The mind of a terrorist is something...

...tening. Killing the innocent is inhumane and unjustifiable and that is what terrorism is. The impact of terrorism is undeniable. It has impacted people’s lives even if they were not directly affected by the act of terror. As we continue to look for ways to counter and fight terrorism we should not place targets on people for what they look like or their beliefs. The repercussions of terrorism are still being felt today and even though some may not like these impacts they are there for security and trying to protect us so that we can live a life without fear that terrorism brings.
