With today’s technological advancements, many people forget to look back on the way things used to be done. Right now we have Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and Pinterest to socialize and share knowledge. Back before these social sites existed, people were not living in the dark or under a rock; people had non face-to-face communication before these social media methods became wildly popular. Though with the current forms of social media, we have little to no need for the “old school” social media, instead the modern social media provide more benefits to users than the old social media methods.
Human’s developed many ways to socialize from far distances before social media. The first method of communication is letters. Even now, people still use this ancient system to contact one another. “The earliest form of postal service dates back to 550 B.C.” (Hendricks). In 1792 the telegraph was created and took social communication to a new level. A telegraph is a communications system that transmits information up a wire through electric pulses. The telegraph was favored communication method because it allowed messages to be sent faster than a rider on a horse. The major downside to the telegraph was the duration of the messages. “Newspapers were the great mass medium throughout much of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries” (Whitehouse). There would also be certain sections of the newspaper that would contain, what would be equivalent to the modern day Match.com and eHarmony. The newspaper would run profiles of people who were searching for a suitable marriage partner. A typical newspaper would also have sections like: weather, movies, family, sports, politics, and more. To conclude, the world wasn’t an old barren wasteland where everybody stayed indoors before familiar social media sites were shared. People had other ways converse from long distances and get the latest news like: radios, newspaper, telegraph, mail and more. These “old school” methods were all unique in their own way, and upgraded as time progressed. Even with their innovative upgrades and style; the new social networking systems we have today still dominate over the older ways. Modern social media helps connect our busy diversified world with different cultures and beliefs for an affordable price. With their advantages and disadvantages social networks like: Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, and more, we find ourselves in a place where the whole world in conveniently at our fingertips.
