This essay will examine the impact the Media has on our perception of crime. “Crime” is an action or an omission which constitutes an offense and is also punishable by law. An example of this would be murder or fraud. The term “media” is the means of mass communication, for example, Social Media, Radio, Television.
The media is something that you are constantly surrounded by and almost can’t get away from. Everywhere you go there is media. For example, walking to the shop you can briefly look at your smartphone for a very brief second and find out that someone was killed around the corner from you 20 minutes ago. The article states “Andrew Conley told investigators that he identified with the character from the hit TV series about a police forensic expert who moonlights as a serial killer. The 17-year-old told detectives that he had wanted to kill someone for years.” This is an example of how something that was made to entertain can influence and impact people’s perception of crime through watch the media. This piece of media being on TV, has had a negative impact on this person. In Stanley Cohen’s theory, he tells us that he believes there is a systematic process we go through when crime is reported in the news. He speaks about starting with the problem being identified by the media, this being the television news, twitter etc. After this step, he then goes on to talk about our reaction and us getting worried because of reading the news. This is a reaction the reporters want us to have for the next steps to finalise. The next step involves the police and the government getting involved and responding in a way to show that they are doing something about it. When they respond, we get more worried as we then think it’s serious because it has been responded to by a high authority. From the higher authorities responding, this then means they will catch more people committing the crime which causes more issues along the line of crime. The last step of Stanley Cohen’s theory involves us or others acting in a way to protect themselves. This is what Cohen calls the “Self For filling prophecy” which means that in order to make ourselves feel protected we self for fill ourselves to by doing something or keeping something to protect us. This could be a knife for example. This is a great example of how the media works.This is a good theory of how the media works as this could be a way in which the media thinks, in order to get a good reaction and a good amount of attention
