The article states “Andrew Conley told investigators that he identified with the character from the hit TV series about a police forensic expert who moonlights as a serial killer. The 17-year-old told detectives that he had wanted to kill someone for years.” This is an example of how something that was made to entertain can influence and impact people’s perception of crime through watch the media. This piece of media being on TV, has had a negative impact on this person. In Stanley Cohen’s theory, he tells us that he believes there is a systematic process we go through when crime is reported in the news. He speaks about starting with the problem being identified by the media, this being the television news, twitter etc. After this step, he then goes on to talk about our reaction and us getting worried because of reading the news. This is a reaction the reporters want us to have for the next steps to finalise. The next step involves the police and the government getting involved and responding in a way to show that they are doing something about it. When they respond, we get more worried as we then think it’s serious because it has been responded to by a high authority. From the higher authorities responding, this then means they will catch more people committing the crime which causes more issues along the line of crime. The last step of Stanley Cohen’s theory involves us or others acting in a way to protect themselves. This is what Cohen calls the “Self For filling prophecy” which means that in order to make ourselves feel protected we self for fill ourselves to by doing something or keeping something to protect us. This could be a knife for example. With a record of an average 119 television channels available to each household, television dominates American life (MediaBuyerPlanner). This wide assortment of television gives viewers many different realities to imitate, like a small child following and obeying its parent. One of the leading television shows in our society is the CSI franchise, with three different extensions. CSI, and shows similar to it, portray the criminal justice system in a negative light, which causes confusion between reality and fiction. Television is a means of entertainment, yet its influence on today’s generation is powerful and enchanting. Television shows centered on criminal justice are implausible portrayals of reality that create unrealistic expectations of evidence in the courtroom, as well as creating superfluous fear of murder for the viewers.
The ‘common sense hierarchy of immorality’ is that crimes of intention are more immoral than those of indifference. It can be argued that corporate crimes or crimes of indifference are the real crimes that cause the most human suffering due to official crime statistics. The media can be said to keep the real stories hidden from the public in order to keep it appealing and keep it’s users in fear so that they can maximise their number of users and profit. In my opinion, I believe that the way we view crime through this ‘common sense hierarchy of immorality’ is wrong we are afraid of things that can be said, we have a 90% chance of dying from. We have more of a chance to die from crimes of indifference than those of intention. It can be said that our minds have been constructed to believe that crimes of indifference are less harmful and most of the time mistakes but, it can be argued that when someone does something and has no concern to whom they are harming is more of a problem than someone who intentionally commits a crime. The ‘common sense hierarchy of immorality’ needs to be changed around and base crimes of indifference at the top and intentional crimes at the bottom. Since violence had become part of every individual's life, they see it as a regular event, which reduces the hatred for violence. Nelson implies that when an individual get exposed to controversial violent acts such executions, those individuals are less likely to react and take action against this violent topic. Nelson argues that “Model of shaming-us into-action-by-unmasking-the-truth-of-our actions cannot hold a candle to our capacity to assimilate horrific images and to justify or shrug off horrific behavior” (Nelson 300). Desensitization to violence takes away the individual's senses of supporting “right” and “wrong” cause of violent acts. As a results, individuals either try to justify the violent acts or just ignore or deny. Likewise, instead of getting horrified by the news of the murder of Matt Shepard, some residents of Laramie became defensive, by attempting to deny the existence of intolerance in their town. Loffreda writes that‘“Hate is not a Wyoming value,’ residents kept telling each other, telling the visitor, telling the press. ‘We really take care of each other here,’ a woman told me one day in a coffee shop, echoing a dearly held ethos I’ve heard from many in Laramie ”(Loffreda 254). “Crime myths are powerful constructions of reality because they speak to our personal values and beliefs and are steeped in rich symbolism, which reinforces those values and belief.” (Kappeler & Potter, 2004) Crime myths are created when a series of fictional events that are later altered so that they become social and political problems. The media plays a major role in the creation of crime myths they broadcast images and videos to go along with the crime myths, they also use social context that play on humans thought on the community seeing it as unsafe. Myths also contain some measure of economic conditions that then cause reactions by politicians to create new laws to prevent these myths from becoming major problems in the criminal justice system. (K&P, 2004) In order for a statement to be characterized as a crime myth, if the crimes instill fear and threaten the vast majority of society. (K&P,2004) Crime myths are made up of components that targets and identify of a distinct deviant population, they involve innocent and helpless victims, the emergence of brave and virtuous hearos ,comes as a threat to peoples established norms, values, or traditional lifestyles.
Throughout society there are both individuals and groups of people with a wide range of perceptions about crime and justice. These perceptions are influenced by the media and what the media presents. Media presents crime stories in ways that selectively distort and manipulate public perception, thus creating a false picture of crime. Therefore the media provides us with perceptions and social constructions about our world. Firstly I will be discussing the role of the media in constructing knowledge about crime. I will begin by explaining why the media is important, and go further to explain that media representations construct knowledge of crime and since knowledge about crime is constructed it does not necessarily capture reality in fact crime stories are often sensationalised. I will then link this to my central argument that the media shapes people’s perceptions of crime and how this is important as it can lead to changes in the law. I will then explain what it is that the public or society needs to be aware of when reading and watching media reports about crime. We need to be aware of bias and moral panics that are created by the media and how the media shapes or influence’s public perception through this, it is important for us to be aware of misleading or false crime stories so that we are not swayed by the media in believing what they want us to believe.

In the criminal justice field, many studies are focused on the effects of media’s portrayal of crime. The definition of media has included TV news, TV dramas (Law and Order,NCIS, etc), and newspapers. Chiricos. Padgett, and Gertz (2011) and Romer, Hall Jamieson, and Aday (2003) included local versus national TV news watching in their study. Both studies found that increase in viewership of news media increased fear of crime. One found that local news had more of an influence on fear of crime than national news (Chiricos, Padgett, & Gertz, 2000).

Surette discusses the two tenets concerning criminal justice and the media. The first is the “backwards law” which states that anything the media portrays is in fact the opposite of what is really happening (2010, p. 182). He goes on to explain that this distortion is due to how news is presented in either an episodic format, the following of a single incident or case, or thematic format, a flowing of trends, and how both formats only show a small fraction of the reality (p. 183). The other is the “rule of immanent justice.” Surette defines immanent justice as “the belief that a divine higher power will intervene, and reveal and punish the guilty while protecting the innocent” (p. 186). Print media was factual, although sometimes sensational, while electronic media made use of the technologies, such as videotapes and live footage to enhance and exaggerate the drama of the event even further. Many research studies have been conducted to show the effects of the media coverage on crime and how it influences the publics of fear of crime. Mass media has perpetuated a notion that crime is on the increase by portraying events and tragedies in the headlines that are sensational. The public buys into that idea, despite statistical accounts that reflect stable or low crime rates. The more stories people read and watch about crime, the more likely they are to think that crime is out of control. Politicians may then enact legal reforms to sooth the public’s outcry for crime control and prevention. As easy as it may be to hold the media accountable for barraging us with images and ideas that affect our views and beliefs, it important that the public take responsibility for the information that we consume. After all, there is always the “off” button on the remote control.

Whenever a society perceives that there has been an increase in a particular type of crime due to increased media coverage this is known as a crime wave. Although this does not necessarily mean that there has been an increase in that particular crime and some evidence shows that there can actually be a decrease in crime (AIC, 2010). Defined as being generated when moral outrage is created by the media, a moral panic creates labelling certain groups or activities as being deviant and a threat to the social and moral order. (Mesko, Cockcroft, Crawford and Lemaitre, 2009). This falls under Labelling theory, as identified by Becker in 1963. The media convey a sensationalised image of crime and a protective view of police and policing practices – and make unusual events usual in our lives (White & Perrone, 2012). As quoted by Schnideler & Ewart “Crime waves are great headlines and can be an ongoing source of stories for new media”. To demonstrate these two effects, in an American campaign concerning missing and exploited children the media reported that “thousands of children” were being kidnapped and are missing, creating a public “moral panic”. Reputable sources such as Time Magazine joined in on extraordinary claims that over 800,000 children went missing every year in America. Local television stations also took to broadcasting images of missing children on a daily basis combined these media activities created the illusion of a crime wave. As a result surveys taken then revealed that 75% of America’s parents lived in fear that a stranger may abduct their child (Israel & Swartz, 2000). Everyday we encounter the media in some form. It could be waking up to the sound of the radio, or passing billboards in the streets or simply just watching television. They are a lot of different forms of media, for example, verbal or written media, visual media and aural media. Examples of media would include newspapers, magazines, film, radio, television, billboard advertisements as well as the internet. Media studies came about because of the developments in mass communication and it provokes the generation of exigent questions about what we think we know as well how we came about knowing it. There are always changes in the media and the term “media” refers to the many ways of physically forming meanings as well and carrying them.
