Email is a popular way to communicate online. With ever-growing technology online communication is only becoming more popular among people today. The question that remains is what impact does email have on our communication? Email has different impacts depending on if it is for professional or personal use. Email as a form of communication for professional use is positive, while impact for personal use is fairly negative. Overall the impact of email on interpersonal communication has positive and negative effects that can affect each other. My positive experiences with email have mostly been with gaining information on work related details. My professors send emails about projects and their due dates, I send and receive information with an alumni who I am interning with, and I get rehearsal schedules and other important information regarding any work I am currently involved in with the Drama Club. I have also experienced negative impacts on my communication while using email. I have had many times where I have tried to contact someone and my email has never been answered. In terms of my interpersonal communication there have been emails that I have sent and had to reestablish what I was trying to say because a misunderstanding happened along the way. As with any form of online communication the misunderstanding might have come from a lack of nonverbal cues or, with many types of communication, it could have come from a lack of shared knowledge. Personally I have experienced a decrease in face-to-face communication while participating in email and other forms of online discussion. There have been many times where my friends and I would chat online with each other while sitting in the same room. Specifically, there was a time where a friend and I were sitting in the same room while sending emails to each other as a joke since we don’t communicate through email as much as through social media sites such as
Ever since I have been in college my telephone has been shorting out every time I try to have a conversation with someone on it. It has been so aggravating! Especially when I am trying to talk and the person on the other line keeps saying, what, what...What did you say? It drives me crazy! Well when I got to college I was advised, and later informed, that it was a requirement to know how to use the Internet. So I signed up for an E-mail account. In high school I never used the computer for anything but assignments, but now I constantly find myself on line. I am either E-mailing friends far away, or talking to my family on IM (Instant Message). The Net has been most helpful to me when it comes to contacting others, especially since my phone doesnt work. Most importantly, I feel that the Net has brought my family and I closer together. After I read Finding Ones Own in Cyberspace, by Amy Bruckman, an essay explaining that to enjoy the Net we need to find our own place, our own community, so I realized that my community on the Net is E-mail, enabling me to talk to the people closest to me. The movie You've Got Mail starring, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, exemplifies how two people become closer through E-mail. Making it easier for people to connect in ways they always could, but never new how. Both the movie, Youve Got Mail, and Bruckmans Finding Ones Own in Cyberspace explore how the Net brings out a side of us that cannot be seen by the human eye. You've Got Mail is a love story about a man and woman who meet on the Internet and use e-mail to talk to each other. Although they havent met face to face they know so much about each other that if they were to meet, it wouldnt matter what the other person looked like. Hankss character owns a very popular bookstore that in turn makes Ryans tiny family bookstore go out of business. Therefore, Ryan hates Hanks throughout the whole movie. Everyday they seem to run into each other not knowing that the person(s) behind their faces are their soul mates. Little do they know the person they see everyday and the person that they despise is the same person they talk to every night when using E-mail or their I.

The continued advancement of information and communication technologies has virtualized interpersonal communication process in various ways. Initial definitions of Interpersonal Communication indicated that the interaction/s needs to be face-to-face, but now with technological innovations the concept is getting disputed. In terms of dating (within my age group), prevalent usage of dating websites, and phone apps such as Tinder, OkCupid, and Match are normal and standard. In an article published in The Atlantic it stated, “American adults ages 18 to 24 used online-dating sites and apps at an average rate for all American adults—about 10 percent. Since then, that rate has almost tripled. College-aged and post-college-aged Americans are now the most likely demographic to turn to the technology” (Robinson Meyer, The Atlantic.com). My initial assumptions and imaginations about on-line communities are formed by personal preferences in how I choose to communicate, limited knowledge and understanding, and most significantly limited experiences. I use email to communicate for a variety of purposes. I will send a brief message to somebody I intend to call or write a letter to very soon to let them know I am thinking about them. I also use email to send information that would be more beneficial to see in text than hear as a voice message such as emailing a student in any of my classes at CSUN about an upcoming assignment. However, email is not my first choice of communication. For example, I just received an email from a friend of mine in Oregon who I have not heard from in many months. She sent me a lengthy and involved email about what has been happening with her and her family. As I was beginning to email her back I stopped to instead write her a letter. Using a chosen note card and handwriting a letter conveyed a more personal approach to the correspondence. Of course, I email many people often, but there are instances where I feel that communicating via email is not as personal and thoughtful.

People in today’s world rely too heavily on the convenience of new communication technologies including emails, texting, and social media. Whilst the importance of these mediums and the way to which they have transformed modern communication cannot be denied, the importance of face-to-face communication and the benefits it provides must not be negated. Communication is a key element of human nature and ‘we communicate for many many reasons, these can be simplified down to three; to persuade, to inform, and to express. (Harper 2014)’ Technology aids the efficiency and frequency to which information is shared but can diminish the three main purposes of communication; to inform, express and persuade, decreasing it's quality. Teamwork and social skills are the cornerstone of functioning effectively in a business driven environment because businesses require networking and interpersonal communication skills with another individual. At times, meeting face to face is not applicable so online means of communication must be used. However, we, as human beings, are susceptible to misinterpreting information if all the details are not clearly explained. Misinterpreting information can lead to a decrease in overall productivity. As Chuck Martin declares in his article “The Importance of Face-to-Face Communication at Work”, “A global survey shows that 67 percent of senior executives and managers say their organization would be more productive if their superiors communicated more often by personal discussion. While they desire more personal discussion from their superiors, however, the top personal method of communicating for these same business leaders is e-mail, based on the survey by NFI Research.” The survey shows that even senior executives value personal communication as it can shed light on confusing scenarios and difficult obstacles. Face to face communication has an abundance of benefits; these benefits include the ability to see facial expressions to prevent miscommunications. It also helps us to become more skilled listeners. When communicating face to face you can gain trust of others. There are not very many negatives of face to face interactions. Electronic communication on the other hand has very few positives, more negatives exists when using this form of communication. The benefits include meeting new people, gaining more courage to talk to people, giving advice and being able to communicate with friends and family that live far away. The approach of communication has changed a lot due to technology. Technology has helped shy individuals pursue more friendships leading to more communication. “A considerable (48%) of young adults in Western societies report shyness; thus, large numbers of people experience fear and avoidance of face-to-face communication, which affects their lives in many ways” (Lynne & Keaten, 2007, p. 350). These new ways of communication due to technology has assisted these shy individuals in entering the world of communication a little more smoothly. One who is shy does not have to endure a face-to-face conversation as much as one would have before this modern technology. The assumption of removing face-to-face communication is that shy individuals will not experience the fear or awkwardness associated with interaction (Lynne & Keaten, 2007).
